(1) The holy Spirit is quenched by Strife and Contention; by ref ing his ordinary Motions, his gracious Influences, upon our Minds; by neglecting to prove his Gifts of any kind; and in general, by living a careless or wicked Life. Some injudicious People have fancied, that the holy Spirit is quenched by using a Form in our Prayers; but to omit o ther Arguments, their mistake is manifeft, becaufe our Lord not only taught his Difciples a Form, but ufed Forms himfelf. See the Note on Mat. 6. 9, I will add, that he who does not use a Form, and he who

Sare pure, whatfoever things 15 are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any Virtue,

prays by a Form, may pray without the Spirit, as both the one and the other may be graciously affifted by him. The Spirit of Prayer in a good degree, confifts in having a divine and heavenly Temper, in being fenfible of our Wants, in applying to God through the Mediation of Jefus Chrift for relief, with a true and fincere defire of being heard, and with a Dépendance on the Bounty and Goodness of God to grant what we ask, To far as he fees it to be beft for us.

(1) The Meaning of the Apoftle here cannot be that it is our Duty 10 go amongst all the feveral Denominations of People profeffing Religi on, to try and prove their Principles and Doctrines; for that would be a very hazardous Undertaking to many, whofe Senfes are not exercifed to difern between good and evil. But the Apoftle's Meaning feems to be, That ifany thing is propofed as an Article neceffary to be believed, or as a Duty neceffary to be practifed, that we fhould then examine whether it be agreeable to the Scriptures, and the Doctrine delivered by the Apoftles; if it be, we are to receive and hold it faft; if not, we are to reject it. Dr. Whitby obferves, That the Apoftle does not here bid the Guides of the Church try all things, and the People hold faft that which they delivered to them; but he gives an Injunction common to all Chriftians. Prove all things by the Spirit of Difcretion that is in the Church, and the Confonancy of their pretended Prophecies and Interpretations with what we have delivered to you, and then hold fast that which is good. It follows, abstain from all appearance of Evil; that is, from every kind or Tort of Evil. See Archbishop Tillotson's Sermon on 1 Jib. 4.1. in the d. Vol. publifhed by himself.

(2) What is meant by Body, all agree; but the Apprehenfions of Men concerning the Diftinction between Soul and Spirit are different. The moft probable Opinion I take to be that of thofe, who by Soul, under

The Spirit or Mind being renewed and affifted by the holy Spirit, is compleatly armed to gain a Victory, other. wife its efforts, by reafon of the Corruption of humane Nature by Sin, will be but feeble and ineffectual.
