CHAP. I.

Of the grammatical Sense of the Words, and whether they be merely metaphorical.

HEBREWS X. 12, 13.

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins, for ever sat down on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

1. ALBEIT the right hand be more worthy than the left, yet some (rather desirous to shew their reading than to edify their readers or hearers) have made question, whether it be a note of greater dignity to have place on the left hand or on the right, near to the fountain of honour or supreme majesty. But all the instances which they bring, or can be brought, for preeminence of place on the left hand, are but as calendars out of date, or as astronomical observations purposed for eastern meridians, but misapplied to them of the
