PREFACE.

THE special aim of the present work is to impart interest and clearness to a subject which, as treated in the ordinary text books, is not unfrequently felt, by teacher and student alike, to be somewhat dry and confusing. Whilst leading the student from each stop to the next by a connected chain of reasoning, and (as I hope) carrying the analysis as far as is desirable, I have avoided making artificial or unnecessarily minute distinctions. The numerous examples interspersed through the chapters are intended to serve both as illustrations and as exercises.

It is not necessary to point out here the great value of a thoroughly intelligent analysis of sentences as a branch of study. It is now

generally admitted to tend in a very high degree to aid perspicuity of expression, and to promote, as a consequence, clearness of thought.

Castle-Douglas, April, 1885.
