These Machines are made only by the Inventor and Patentee, Mr. MYERS, Printers' Engineer, Caxton Machine Works, Southampton.

The above prices include roller moulds, two sets of roller sticks, erecting and packing; also a two years' Guarantee in Writing. References can be given to about Fifty working Machines.

CAXTON MACHINE WORKS,

Southampton, Nov. 19, 1859.

Mr. Myers, the inventor and sole maker of ye Caxton Machine, regrets to find the merits of that machine has induced sellers of other machines, unable to meet his challenge (see Publisher's Circular, Feb. 16, 1857, May 1, 1858, and Dec. 1, 1858) openly, to adopt proceedings on which comment is unneces sary beyond the natural inference that, if such means are necessary to sell those machines, purchasers should be very guarded in obtaining an effective and responsible guarantee with them. The following

letters will illustrate :

YE CAXTON . MAIN'S MACHINE. (Copy.)

"Barnstaple, Sept. 12, 1859.

"Dear Sir, I was very glad to have had the oportunity of testing the correctness of Harrild's traveller's assertions. He gave me the names of two printers whom he told me were so dissatisfied with your machine that they wanted to get rid of them to make room for theirs. In fact, he made out your machine full of faults, and he said if I bought it I should heartily repent of my bargain. I wrote to these gentlemen, and they both stated their reasons why they wished to sell, and expressed themselves highly satisfied with its work. I told Harrild's traveller I should report his observations to you, when he was very desirous that should not mention his name; but I told him I should, and

he went off in high dudgeon, which at once convinced me that his allegations were unfounded. We have now made up our minds to purchase your machine, and I hope and believe you will supply us with one which will prove to our satisfaction in every respect, with all the new improvements. The size to be double-royal, &c. &c.

"(Signed) THOMAS HEARSON."

The machine ordered was erected and set at work, and paid for Oct. 29th; and in a letter dated Nov. 16th, is the following paragraph:-" We are much pleased with the machine, and wish you every success." The same report was also made to Messrs. Wood Brothers, Gazette Office, Bath, who have since had erected a double-royal Caxton.

Of the two machines referred to by the traveller, one is at Messrs. Bemrose and Sons, Derby, the first Caxton made, for the assertion, but have since ordered a double-royal super-royal size; these gentlemen not only deny the right Caxton, now constructing for them. The other machine is at Mr. Gutch's, High street, Southampton; and being too large for his present trade (the newspaper formerly worked there being defunct), a Main's Machine has been ordered a smaller machine being made by Main's than the Caxton cares about making. The guarantee of ye Caxton having run out, printers will understand that neither the quality of the machine is deteriorated, or the good understanding of Mr. Gutch and Mr. Myers affected, by the latter renewing his guarantee to any purchaser of the machine without any fee, the machine being equal to a

new one.

sellers' Record, Nov. 5, 1859, is the following:In the notices to correspondents of the Critic and Book

"E., junior.-We know nothing of the Caxton Machine, but can strongly recommen the Main's Machine. A double-royal can be worked at 700 per hour by hand. Write to Harrild and Sons, Farringdon Street."

Ye Caxton is happy to state that orders are so plentiful for its make, that such practices are unnecessary, and pities the journalist who so far forgets his public position. Strange to say after this, the same Critic, &c., re-applies for ye Caxton advertisement, with a scale of prices-!!

YE CAXTON v. ULVERSTONIAN.

In a letter dated June 24, 1859, from the New Zealander Office, Auckland, New Zealand (worked by a Caxton sent out May, 1856), is the following:

"I hear from Mr. Crosbie Ward that his machine is on the way. If possible I shail" run down" (only some 600 miles) and help him put it in working order, and see what

YE CAXTON This machine, though only nine months or so old, has been obliged to succumb to the superior merits of ye Caxton. A double-royal Sector, erected at Pioneer Office, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, after repeated breakages, &c., was carefully packed up and returned whence it came, and ye Caxton reigned in its stead. The agents of this machine (or rather the owners) are reporting that ve Caxton is so far convinced of the Sector's superiority, &c., that it will collapse if the maker and inventor is allowed to make the Sector. Mr. Myer's flatly contradicts this, and the correspondence between the agents and himself shall be

improvements you have made. An Ulverstonian has come out to the proprietors of the Southern Cross, another Auck land paper. It can hardly be worked."

There are other machines of this make that are similarly situated in England, and ye Caxton is repeatedly asked to exchange with a bonus, but declines the honour.

v. SECTOR.

published for distribution. So far from ye Caxton been so hard up, the Southampton factory is unable to supply fast enough, and a second factory has been in operation some time in the North, and orders are still in arrear; a third factory in London will shortly be opened for the manufac ture of the Caxton Machines. Ye Caxton presents its compliments to the Sector, and would like to see its testimonials; but they must be signed, and by the principais also, for it hears of unsigned "testimonials in manuscripts being sent out.

Ye Caxton throws down the gauntlet to all these crank or cranky machines, and tells them that till they can unite the engineer and practical printer in one person, as in the case of Mr. Myers, its inventor and maker, they cannot hope to compete with it, notwithstanding all their tradesmanlike defamation.

See Publishers' Circular of Feb. 16, 1857, which was obnoxious.

THE CHEAPEST AND MOST VALUABLE SINGLE-CYLINDER MACHINE FOR
GENERAL PURPOSES EVER PRODUCED.

[graphic][subsumed][subsumed]

[Protected by Her Majesty's Royal Letters Patent.]

The PATENT" BELLE SAUVAGE" PRINTING MACHINE is constructed on principles combining simplicity and durability with speed and economy, and is acknowledged to be unquestionably the most perfect and useful Machine ever yet introduced for Newspaper, Book, and First-Class Jobbing Work, Broadsides, &c.

The Machine occupies but little space, is sufficiently light to admit of its being erected in an ordinary press-room, and can be driven with ease by Hand, or by Steam Power, at the rate of 1,000 impressions per hour.

The IMPROVED RECIPROCATING MOTION given to the carriage, by means of Compound Levers or Beams placed immediately in the centre of the Machine, connected to the end of the table by well-fitted horizontal rods, imparts a perfectly steady and even movement to the Machine, thus materially lessening the noise usually attending the working of Machines, and reducing the liability to accident and stoppage.

The CYLINDER being made to rest while the WHITE sheet is taken and the PRINTED one delivered (printed side upwards), gives ample time to lay the sheet correctly up to the Register Gauge; the Grippers then receiving the sheet by means of a carefully adjusted tumbler motion in front of the laying-on board, thereby secures perfect register without the necessity of "points."

PRICES: (HAND POWER) INCLUDING FLY-WHEEL AND TWO SETS OF ROLLER STOCKS.!

No. 1. Royal, occupying the space of 6ft. 0 in. x 4 ft. 0 in. Size of Table, 24 in. x 29 in.
