Corbridge or of any of his predecessors, nor could it be proved that he had been ordained priest within a year after his institution, and that he appeared by Robert de Baumburg, his proctor, who could show nothing concerning his orders, nor could do anything on a further adjournment, the official declared that, as Mortimer had been instituted two years before and was not yet ordained priest, the church of Huntington was declared void.

3 It is unfortunate that no date is given, as this is perhaps the earliest entry in the Register. The temporalities were restored to archb. Corbridge at Stamford on April 30 (C.P.R., 1292-1301, p. 511), when no doubt he made his oath of fealty to the king. He was at Clarborough

in Notts. on May 13 (no. 397), the
place where the archb. was on May 5
not being given (no. 290). Woluey
may be Wolvey, eight miles north-
east of Coventry, or Woolley, six
miles south-west of Huntingdon.
It is very unlikely to be Woolley
near Wakefield.

1 Boniface viii on Feb. 24, 1296,
in the bull, "clericis laicos," ab-
solutely forbad the payment by the
clergy to laymen of any tax what-
ever on the revenues of their
churches. In consequence of this
bull the clergy were unable to make
any grant in convocation to the
king, who at once put them out of
his protection and seized all their
temporalities. Ultimately the king
and clergy came to terms, and in the
winter of 1297 the Southern Pro-
vince granted a subsidy of a Tenth
and the Northern one of a Fifth. In

"

making this payment the religious became subject to the papal displeasure, which does not appear to have affected the secular clergy, and it became necessary for such offenders as had celebrated whilst in a state of excommunication to get absolved from the excommunication into which they had fallen by contributing to such a subsidy. The bull Clericis laicos is printed in the Chronicon Walteri de Hemingburgh, ii, 113, where there is a fairly full account of the different circumstances relating to the quarrel between the king and the clergy. There are three other similar absolutions for other Cistercian housesRievaulx, Citeaux for the cell at Scarborough, and Meaux (nos. 291, 293, 397).

2 Matteo d'Acquasparta, a Franciscan and general of the order, cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Damaso, Whit Sunday, 1288, bishop of Porto, 1291, died 1302, and was buried in S.M. in Araceli in Rome. He was legate in Florence in 1300 and 1301.
