1 Nov. 26, 32 Edward I (1303). Dumfermlyn. Writ of prohibition directed to the archbishop or his commissaries, forbidding them to try in the court of Christianity the claim of Adam de Osegodeby to the church of Gayregrave, to which he had been presented by Henry de Percy, the fourth part of the advowson of which church the abbot of Furneys asserted belonged to him (fo. 59*). Michaelmas Term, 21 Edward I (1293). Edmund, the king's brother, Guy Ferre and John de Skardeburgh, executors of Alianor, the king's mother v. the king as guardian of the heir of Henry de Percy under age, about the advowson of Geyrgrave. Henry de Percy presented temp. Henry III. The jury found that the manor and advowson of Geyrgrave had been in the seisin of William de Percy (Henry's father), and were a member of William's manor of Catton (probably Catton in the E.R.), and that William had alienated the manor of Geyrgrave saving the advowson, and that the advowson during the minority belonged to the executors of the queen mother under a grant from the king. This, however, was not admitted by the king's attorney (Assize Roll, no. 1085, m. 22d.). Osgod by was an ecclesiastical lawyer who rose to eminence under the pro

tection of his neighbour and probably relative, William of Hambleton. Osgodby, in the parish of Hemingbrough, whence he derived his name, is not far from Hambleton. Canon Raine, in his History of Hemingbrough (pp. 304-307), gives an account of the family of Osgodby. He mentions a Jordan de Hamelton or Osgodby, almost certainly a collateral ancestor of both Osgodby and Hambleton. Adam was the son of Robert de Osgodby, who was living in 1284, and brother of Richard, vicar of Bubwith, who succeeded his brother in the prebend of Ulleskelf in 1316 (C.P.R., 13131317, P. 534). All his preferments were due to the Crown. He was inducted into Gargrave in 1293, but had not been instituted almost two years later (Reg. Romeyn, i, 134, 150). In 1298 he was Keeper of the Rolls (C.P.R., 1292-1301, p. 328), and a year later had a grant of the prebend of Ulleskelf in York Minster (ibid., p. 437). In 1307 he was appointed custodian of the conversi, the converted Jews (ibid., 13071313, p. 15). In 1310 he was presented to two parts of the church of Attleborough, in the diocese of Norwich (ibid., p. 227), and in 1312 he had a grant of the prebend of Blewbury in the church of Salisbury, which had belonged to John de

XXVII. II kal. Dec. (Nov. 21), 1301. Cawode. Com- Fo. 11. mission to the same and Sir Roger de Mar to audit the ac

Berewyk (ibid., p. 468). He was also possessed of a prebend in the church of Burford, co. Salop, worth 20li. a year (C.C.R., 1307-1313, p. 98). He was in constant association with Hambleton. He was present when the Great Seal was delivered to Hambleton in the little Exchequer at Westminster on Jan. 16, 1304-5, and after his death at Fountains on April 19, 1307, was one of those commissioned to carry the Great Seal back to Westminster (C.P.R., 1301-1307, pp. 309, 518). As one of the clerks of chancery the Great Seal was more than once delivered into his custody. In 1311 and 1312 the three commissioners were all Yorkshiremen from the south-east of the county: Adam of Osgodby, Robert of Barlby, and William of Airmyn, bishop of Norwich, 1325 to 1336 (C.C.R., 1307– 1313, PP. 393, 459). From dispensations entered on the Calendar of Papal Letters (ii, 40, 75) we learn that in addition to the benefices

mentioned above he held or had
held the churches of Wavendon and
Maids Moreton, both in Bucks., and
Hauxwell, in the dioceses of Lincoln
and York, as well as canonries and
prebends at Wells and Bromyard
and Lanchester in the dioceses of
Hereford and Durham.
His ing.

p.m. was taken at York on Oct. 8,
1316 (writ dated Oct. 1), when he
died seised of land in Ulleskelf and
6 marks rent in Yapham, and of
property in Newhay in Drax which
he had given in his lifetime to his
brother Walter. His heir was John
son of John de Osgodby, aged 15 in
the previous Lent (Cal. ing. p. m.,
vi, 4). Canon Raine (History of
Hemingbrough, pp. 16, 91, 307) adds
that he was buried in Lincoln Cathe-
dral under a marble slab in which he
was termed a clerk of the chancery,
and that he founded a chantry on
the north side of Hemingbrough
church.

ii, 233).
