Yet, fhooting upwards, fends his Shaft to show
An Archer's Art, and boaft his twanging Bow.
Chaf'd by the Speed, it fir'd, and as it flew,
A Trail of foll'wing Flames afcending drew.
Kindling they mount, and mark the shiny Way;
Across the Skies, as falling Meteors, play,

And vanish into Wind,or in a Blaze decay.Dryd.Virg.S

ARGUS.

The Head of Argus, as with Stars the Skies,
Was compafs'd round, and wore a hundred Eyes:
But two by Turns their Lids in Slumber fteep;
The rest on Duty, ftill their Station keep;
Nor could the total Conftellation sleep.

Him Hermes flew.

And all his Hundred Eyes, with all their Light,
Are clos'd at once in one perpetual Night.

These Juno takes, that they no more may fail, (Ovid. And spreads them in her Peacock's gaudy Tail.

ARION.

That was Arion's Crown; Who, playing on his Harpe, unto him drew The Eares and Hearts of all that goodly Crew, That even yet the Dolphin, which him bore Through the gaan Seas, from Pirates View,

Dryd.

Stood ftill, by him aftonisht at his Lore, And all the raging Seas, for Joys, forgot to rore, [Spencer.

ARMS or ARMOUR.
He fheath'd his Limbs in Arms, a temper'd Mafs
Of golden Metal thofe, and Mountain-Brafs.

He admires

The crefted Helm that vomits radiant Fires:
His Hands the fatal Sword and Corflet hold;

One keen with temper'd Steel, one stiff with Gold:

Both

Both ample, flaming both, and beamy bright,
So fhines a Cloud, when edg'd with adverfe Light.
[Dryd. Virg.
Shields, Arms, and Spears, flafh horribly from far,
And the Fields glitter with a waving War. Dryd. Virg.

His Back and Breast.

Well-temper'd Steel, and fcaly Brafs inveft.
The Cuishes, which his brawny Thighs infold,
Were mingled Metal, damafk'd o'er with Gold.
His faithful Fauchion fits upon his Side,
Nor Cafque, nor Creft his manly Features hide.
[Dryd. Virg.
O'er his broad Breaft an Ox's Hide was thrown,
His Helm a Wolf, whofe gaping Jaws were fpread,
A Cov'ring for his Cheeks, and grinn'd around his

(Head. He clench'd within his Hand an Iron Prong, And towr'd above the reft, confpicuous in the Throng. [Dryd. Virg.

A Lion's Hide he wears,

About his Shoulders hangs the shaggy Skin;

The Teeth and gaping Jaws feverely grin. Dryd. Virg.
Some wore Coat-Armour, imitating Scale,

And next their Skin were stubborn Shirts of Mail :
Some wore a Breaft-plate, and a light Juppon,
Their Horfes cloath'd with rich Caparifon.
Some for Defence would leathern Bucklers ufe
Of folded Hides; and others Shields of Pruce.
One hung a Pole-Ax at his Saddle Bow,
And one a heavy Mace to ftun the Foe.
One for his Legs and Knees provided well,

With Jambeux arm'd, and double Plates of Steel.
This on his Helmet wore a Lady's Glove;
And that a Sleeve, embroider'd by his Love.

Dryd. (Pal. Ars.

Words and Devices blaz'd on ev'ry Shield, And pleafing was the Terrour of the Field. Dryd. (Pal. Arc.

ARTS.

ARTS.

Man in mechanick Arts did late excel, That fuccour Life, and noxious Pow'r repel; Which yields Supplies for neceffary Ufe, Or which to Pleasure or to Pomp conduce. How late was found the Loadftone's magick Force, That feeks the North, and guides the Sailor's Course ? How newly did the Printer's curious Skill, Th'inlighten'd World with letter'd Volumes fill? But late the kindled Powder did explode

The maffy Ball, and the brafs Tube unload.

ASH.

[Black. Creat.

Rent like a Mountain Ash, that dar'd the Winds, And stood the sturdy Strokes of lab'ring Hinds. About the Root the cruel Ax refounds,

The Stumps are pierc'd with oft-repeated Wounds :
The War is felt on high, the nodding Crown

Now threats a Fall, and throws the leafy Honours down.
To their united Force it yields, tho' late,

And mourns with mortal Groans th'approaching Fate.
The Roots no more their upper Head sustain;
But down fhe falls, and fpreads a Ruin thro' the Plain.
[Dryd Virg.

ASTONISHMENT.

His curdling Blood forgot to glide,

Confufion on his fainting Vitals hung,

And fault'ring Accents flutter'd on his Tongue. Gar.
She thrice affay'd to speak; her Accents hung,
And fault'ring dy'd unfinish'd on her Tongue,
Or vanish'd into Sighs; with long Delay.
Her Voice return'd, and found the wonted Way.

[Dryd. Ovid
The pale Affiftants on each other star'd,
With gaping Mouths for iffuing Words prepar'd:
The still-born Sounds upon the Palate hung,
And dy'd imperfect on the fault'ring Tongue.

O Sigif

O Sigismonda! he began to fay,

Thrice he began, and thrice was forc❜d to stay, 'Till Words with often trying, found their Way. [Dryd. Sig, and Guife.

PROFESSOR in Aftrology and Phyfick.
An inner Room receives the nam'rous Shoals
Of fuch as pay to be reputed Fools:

Globes ftand on Globes, Volumes on Volumes lie,
And Planetary Schemes amufe the Eye.
The Sage in Velvet Chair here lolls at Eafe,
To promife future Health for present Fees.
Then, as from Tripod, folemn Shams reveals
And what the Stars know nothing of, foretels.
One afks how foon Panthea may be won,
And longs to feel the Marriage-Fetters on :
Others, convinc'd by melancholy Proof,
Enquire when courteous Fate will strike 'em off.
Some by what Means they may redrefs the Wrong,
When Fathers the Poffeflion keep too long.
And fome would know the Iffue of their Caufe,
And whether Gold can fodder up its Flaws.
Poor pregnant Lais his Advice would have,
To lose by Art what fruitful Nature gave.
And Portia, old in Expectation grown,
Laments her barren Curfe, and begs a Son:
Whilft Iris his Cofmetick Wash would try,
To make her Bloom revive, and Lover die.
Some afk for Charms, and others Philtres choose,
To gain Corinna, and their Quartans lofe.

Young Hylas, botch'd with Stains too foul to name,
In Cradle here, renews his youthful Frame:
Gloy'd with Defire, and furfeited with Charms,
A Hot-houfe he prefers to Julia's Arms.
And old Lucullus would th' Arcanum prove,
Of kindling in cold Veins the Sparks of Love.

ATLAS.

And now behold Majestick Atlas rife,

And bend beneath the Burden of the Skies:
His tow'ring Brows aloft no Tempest know,

While Lightning flies, and Thunder rouls below. Gar,

ATOM S.

Firft look around: Whatever meets your Eye,

In the wide Universe of Earth and Sky,

Scatters small Atoms in the ambient Air,

Scal'd from each Body, and whirl'd here and there
In a continual Fluor: Thefe we call

The Elements of Things which form'd this All.
Thefe, with swift violent Motion, wander o'er
Each Senfe, and penetrate the smallest Pore.
But think not here, by thefe continual Flows,
That a corporeal Object leffer grows :
For that Deficiency, and quick Decrease
Of fubtile Bodies, is fupply'd with Ease:
A new Acceffion does the Want repay,
With Atoms fubtile, and as fine as they.
Thefe Images are fo concife and fine,
That, were it poffible for you to join,
And heap together, all which in the Air
Have fluctuated for a hundred Year,
They fcarce would by the naked Eye be read,
Or fpin a little Spider's fmalleft Thread:
Nor do they lefs out-ftrip, in rapid Flight,
The darting Sun-Beams, and the nimble Light,
And the fwift Planets of th’Æthereal World;
With fuch a strong Velocity they're hurld.
Those which from fair and comely Objects fly,
By their own Smoothness please th'affected Eye:
Thro' the Sight's Pores round little Globules fteal,
And the charm'd Senfes a ftrange Pleafure feel;
With fecret Joy the Soul it felf is feiz'd,

And with th' agreeable Idolum pleas'd;
