men respect us. It should attract the worthy to our ranks. Shall it be so? Shall we one and all seek this character for our body, and through it for ourselves? And then let us remember that we may secure higher evidence still of our qualifications by competing for those academical honours which our own and foreign universities offer us. My friends, let us be up and doing. Let the note sound out from this our Conference that national schoolmasters are resolved upon taking their true position-that they care nothing at all about what this man or that party may say as to their proper level in society-they will have their true standing as men of honour and education-they will use their liberty as Englishmen in aspiring to, and by all just means in securing, the honours which belong to the scholar and the gentleman; and then they will leave to society to give them the social position which is their due.

ELEVENTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF ASSOCIATED BODY OF CHURCH SCHOOLMASTERS IN ENGLAND AND WALES. THE proceedings of the Conference commenced on Dec. 29, at Derby, by the members attending Divine service at St. Werburgh's Church, when a special sermon was preached by the Rev. W. F. Wilkinson, the vicar, from Isa. lxi. 8.

At 2 o'clock the members assembled in Curzon Street Schools, for the regular business of the Conference, the chair being taken by the PresidentMr. Macintosh, of Halton Grammar School, Cheshire-who opened the proceedings by an eloquent address upon education and other kindred topics. Teachers from all parts of the country were present.

The following were the topics discussed :---

1. "Actual Results of the New Code," introduced by Mr. Briscoe, of Bolton.

2. "

Endowments, as affected by the Minute of May 19th, 1863," introduced by Mr. Williams, Dringhouses, York.

3. " Inspectors' Assistants," introduced by Mr. Hemming, of Nottingham. 4. "Examination of Evening Schools," introduced by Mr. Mumby, of Derby.

The above were fully discussed, and at the close of the discussion upon the various topics, resolutions were put to the meeting and unanimously carried. The meeting then adjourned till half-past 6 p.m.

EVENING SITTING.

After the Report had been read and adopted, Mr. Graves, the retiring Secretary, was presented with a purse of money and a well-executed silver lever watch, as a slight token of the estimation in which he is held by the Association. Mr. Graves returned thanks in suitable language.

The Conference next proceeded to elect the general officers for 1864. Its choice fell upon Mr. Sluter, St. Mary's School, Stafford (President); Mr. Haskins, Courteenhall Grammar School, Northampton (Treasurer); and Mr. E. W. Hemming, St. Mary's School, Nottingham (Secretary). The Conference also adopted Northampton as the place for the next meeting.

WEDNESDAY'S MEETING.

On Wednesday morning the members re-assembled, the President in the chair. Several members from various parts of the country who were unable to be present yesterday attended to-day.

Mr. Bulman, of Derby, opened the business of the meeting by reading some remarks upon "The Church of England Schoolmasters' and Schoolmistresses' Benevolent Institution." A long and animated discussion followed, in which most of the members took part. On the conclusion of the debate, Mr. Cummings, of Derby, read an excellent paper on "National Schools and their Teachers-past and present."

The business of the afternoon was commenced by the Chairman calling upon Mr. Hemming to read his paper upon "John Milton: the Genius, the Poet, and the Schoolmaster." He was followed by Mr. Mason, of Standish Grammar School, and late of Winchester Training College, who read a highly suggestive paper on the question "Are National Schoolmasters overeducated for their position?" Mr. Graves' paper upon "Village Schools was admirable, and met with the entire approbation of the meeting. The meetings terminated as usual by singing the Doxology. The annual dinner, which took place at the County Hotel, Derby, though not so well attended as it was thought it would be, was nevertheless heartily enjoyed by those who were present.
