A. We are thine, O God; save us, and help us

for thy Name's sake.

Then shall follow these Collects; the family at the conclusion of them, as of all the other prayers, audibly saying, Amen.

FIRST COLLECT.

For Acceptance of our Prayers.

ALMIGHTY and Eternal God, our Creator, Preserver, and Father, hallow our spirits, that we may hallow thy name. As by thy great goodness we live, move, and have our being, grant us such a measure of thy grace, that we may begin anew this morning to live to thee. By thy protecting care we see the light of another day; but oh! let the light of thy countenance gladden our hearts, and elevate our affections to thyself. As thou hast raised us up from sleep, so quicken our souls from spiritual slumber, and all weariness in thy service. Thou hast promised to grant our requests, when we ask any thing according to thy will. Pardon our ignorance in asking, and give us such knowledge of thy will and of our wants, that we may obtain those things that are needful for the relief of our necessities, and for the glory of thy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this,

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, by whose gracious providence all our affairs are daily ordered and governed, incline now thine ear to us, thy

needy dependant servants, to whom thou hast vouchsafed the light of another morning, and renewed opportunity of approaching thy throne of grace. May we find thee, through the mediation of Jesus, favourable to us. Teach us to ask only such things as are according to thy will, and to expect them with filial confidence, and cheerful submission to thy wise appointments. May thy

Holy Spirit fill us with joy and peace in believing, and make us now and always to abound in hope, to the honour and glory of thy name, through Jesus Christ our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

SECOND COLLECT.

For a Blessing on the Word of God.

Especially

O ETERNAL God, infinite in power, goodness, and truth, breathe forth thy Spirit into our hearts, that we may both love and fear thee, and with true contrition, confessing our sins, may obtain of thee pardon, comfort, and help. Make us abundantly thankful for the learning of thy will out of the Holy Scriptures. Grant that the truths we have now heard, may evermore abide with us. grant that &c. &c.* May the good seed of the word, taking deep root downward, in a gracious humility, springing upward in faith and hope, and spreading abroad in charity, make us to abound in every good word and work to the glory of thy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

*Here he who

ministers may turn into peti

tions the princi

pal truths and instructions contained in what

has just been

read.

Amen.

Or this.

O GOD, the inexhaustible source of light and comfort, we humbly beseech thee to replenish us out of thine own fulness with increase of these, and of all other, thy good and perfect gifts. Open out to us those treasures of saving wisdom and spiritual consolation, which are contained in Holy Scripture. Give us a right understanding of thy Word, and so impress its truths on our hearts and consciences, that we may be sufficiently armed for every spiritual conflict, and throughly furnished unto all good works. (Especially, &c.) And so strengthen us by thy grace, that cheerfully following Christ, the Way, and steadfastly believing in Him, the Truth, we may finally attain that eternal life which is in and with him, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

A Confession to be said of the whole family after him who ministers.

BE favourable O Lord, be favourable unto us, who turn to thee confessing our sins, and meekly acknowledging our transgressions. Enter not into judgment with us for the errors of our understandings, the depravity of our wills, and the disorders of our affections. Judge us not for the vanity of our desires, the deceitfulness of our hearts, or the

wickedness of our ways. We cannot of ourselves stand before thee because of our trespasses. Oh! be merciful unto us, for thy great name's sake. Refresh us miserable sinners with thy pardoning

love, according to thy promises declared unto mankind, in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Amen.

Let him who ministers then offer this general prayer.

ALMIGHTY Father, who of thy tender mercy in Christ Jesus, dost grant forgiveness of sins to all who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto thee; we beseech thee favourably to regard us, thy humble servants, who direct our prayer unto thee, and look up. Thou knowest our manifold corruptions, our utter weakness, and the strength and number of our spiritual adversaries. Plead thou therefore our cause with them that strive against us; keep us ever leaning only and wholly on thy help, nor for an instant withhold it from us, lest we fall, and sin against thee yet more. Coudescend to search out our spirits, and to cast out all iniquity from within us. Vouchsafe so to rule and govern our minds, wills, and actions, that we may never knowingly offend thee. Create in us new hearts, quicken in us new affections, and form us to new manners. Subdue in us every unholy disposition and wrong temper. May we so see our manifold evils as diligently to aim to amend them; and so feel our utter frailty, that we may lean wholly on the help of thy heavenly grace. We commit our souls into thy keeping this day, beseeching thee that all our thoughts, words, and works, may be holiness unto thee, and that as thou hast now put good desires into us, so by thy Holy Spirit we may evermore bring the same to good effect, to the

honour and glory of thy name, through Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

Or this,

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men, we beseech thee of thy great goodness to grant us true repentance and lively faith. Confirm and strengthen us this day in a patient, humble, and persevering obedience to thy holy will. Deliver our hearts from the temptation of evil thoughts, our lips from the transgression of idle words, and our lives from giving occasion to the adversaries of our souls to triumph over us. Make us above all things fearful of grieving thy blessed Spirit. May he dwell in us more largely, sanctifying our tempers, controlling our appetites, spiritualizing our desires, and quickening us to all our proper duties. Shed abroad in our hearts the love of Christ; that, ever remembering we are not our own, but are bought with a price, we may heartily aim to glorify him with our bodies, and with our spirits which are his; and so fill each of us with all spiritual blessings out of that fulness which is in him, that we may daily accomplish that service to which thy grace and providence may call us; through the same, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
