world by wisdom knew not God.1 Cor. i. 18. 21.

The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.-1 Cor. ii. 14. John viii. 43.

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of men who believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel, &c. should shine unto them.-2 Cor. iv. 4. Acts xxvi. 17, 18.

SECT. IV. The sad Fruit and end of such a State.

WHEN Adam and Eve had sinned, they hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God, &c. and were afraid, because naked: and in conse quence sorrow on the woman, and a curse on the earth are denounced. Gen. iii. 8. 10. 16, 17. Sin made Cain cry out, and say, His punishment was greater than he could bear. So Lamech.-Gen. iv. 13. 23, 24.

Aaron made Israel naked by sin.-Exod. xxxii. 25.

Lest there be any among you, &c. And it come to pass, &c. That he bless himself in his heart, saying, I will have peace, though I walk in the imagination (or stubbornness) of my heart to add drunkenness to thirst: the Lord will not spare him; but then the anger of the Lord, and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses which are written in this book shall lie upon him; and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven.-Deut. xxix. 18-20. If a man sin against the Lord, who

shall intreat for him? They who despise me, saith the Lord, shall be lightly esteemed.-1 Sam. ii. 25. 30. Saul's sin made him cry out in his distress, That God had departed from him.-1 Sam. xxviii. 15.

The triumphing of the wicked is but short, &c. Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds, he shall perish for ever, like his own dung, &c.-Job xx. 5, &c. xi. 20.

How oft is the candle of the wicked put out, and how oft cometh their destruction upon them? God distributeth sorrows in his anger: they are as stubble, &c. his eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty, &c. The wicked is reserved unto the day of destruction; they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.-Job xxi. 17-19.30. xxvii. 13, 14, &c. xxxi. 2, 3.

The ungodly are like the chaff, which the wind driveth away, &c. They shall not stand in the judgment, &c. The way of the ungodly shall perish.-Ps. i. 4-6.

Thou art not a God who hath pleasure in wickedness, &c. Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.-Ps. v. 4, 5. The wicked his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire, . and brimstone, and an horrible (or burning) tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.-Ps. xi. 5, 6. Isa. xxxiii. 14.

Because they regard not the works of the Lord, &c. he shall destroy them, and not build them up, &c.Ps. xxviii. 5. cxix. 155.

The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance, &c.-Ps. xxxiv. 16. 1 Pet. iii. 12.

The transgressors shall be destroyed together. The end of the wicked shall be cut off.-Ps. xxxvii. 38. 2.

God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.-Ps. 1. 16. 22. Prov. xi. 21. Ps. ix. 18.

Who knoweth the power of thine anger? Even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.-Ps. xc. 11.

When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish, it is that they should be destroyed for ever.-Ps. xcii. 7. 10. xlix. 17, 19.

Such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead forth with the workers of iniquity.Ps. cxxv. 5.

They shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.-Prov. i. 31. v. 22, 23.

The name of the wicked shall rot, &c. The expectation of the wicked shall perish.-Prov. x. 7. 28. xi. 7. ›

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man: but the end thereof are the ways of death.-Prov. xiv. 12.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, &c. so his thoughts are.-Prov. xv. 8. 26. xxi. 27. Isa. lxvi. 3, 4. Gen. iv. 3-7.

The woman whose heart is snares and nets, &c. the sinner shall be taken by her.-Eccles. vii. 26.

But it shall not be well with the wicked, &c. because he feareth not before God.-Eccles. viii. 13. Isa. iii. 11.

Woe unto them who draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin, as it were, with a cart-rope, &c.-Isa. v. 18, &c. Micah ii. 1—3.

No peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.-Isa. xlviii. 22. lvii. 20. ›

Against whom do ye sport yourselves? &c. when thou cryest, Let thy companions deliver thee, &c.— Isa. lvii. 4. 13.

They shall look on the carcasses of men, who have transgressed against me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched, and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.-Isa. lxvi. 24. xxxiii. 14.

Unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes? or that thou shouldest take Every one shall die for his own my, &c. Consider, ye who forget iniquity.-Jer. xxxi. 30.

The soul that sinneth it shall die, -Ezek. xviii. 4. 20. iii. 19.

The axe is laid unto the root of the trees; therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire.-Matt. iii. 10. vii. 19.

The children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness, there shall be weeping, &c.-Matt. viii. 12.

xxiv. 51.

The angels shall gather out of his kingdom, &c. them which do iniquity, and shall cast them into a furnace of fire, there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth, &c. At the end of the world, the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just and shall cast them into the furnace of fire, &c.—Matt. xiii. 41, 42. 49, 50. See Mark ix. 45, 46.

Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up, &c. Both fall into the ditch. Matt. xv. 13, 14.

Cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness, there shall be weeping, &c. When the Son of man shall come, &c. then shall he say unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil, &c. for I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat, &c. These shall go away into everlasting punishment.-Matt. xxv. 30, 31. 41, 42. 46. xxiii. 33. viii. 11, 12.

Those mine enemies who would not that I should reign over them, &c. slay them before me.-Luke xix. 27.

Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God, &c. He who believeth not, is condemned already, &c. he shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.John iii. 3. 18. 36.

Ye are servants of sin, and ye are of your father the devil.-John viii. 34. 44.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, &c. they are worthy of death.-Rom. i. 18. 32.

Thinkest thou this, &c. that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? &c. Thou treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath, and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, &c. Indignation and wrath; tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man who doth evil, &c.Rom. ii. 3. 5. 8, 9.

Destruction and misery are in their ways. Rom. iii. 16.

By one man sin entered, and death by sin.-Rom. v. 12.

Whether of sin unto death, &c. What fruit had ye? &c. the end of those things is death, &c. The wages of sin is death.-Rom. vi. 16. 21. 23. James i. 15.

To be carnally-minded is death, &c. So then, they who are in the flesh cannot please God, &c. for if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die.Rom. viii. 6. 8. 13.

Vessels of wrath fitted to destruction.-Rom. ix. 22.

The unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God, &c. Neither Judas's sin made him to go out, fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adul

terers, &c. shall inherit the kingdom of God.-1 Cor. vi. 9, 10.

If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema, Maranatha.-1 Cor. xvi. 22.

If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them who are lost; in whom the God of, &c.-2 Cor. iv. 3, 4.

The works of the flesh, &c. adultery, fornication, &c. They who do such things, shall not inherit the kingdom of God.-Gal. v. 19-21.

He who soweth to the flesh, shall of the flesh reap corruption.-Gal. vi. 8. Prov. xxii. 8.

You, &c. were dead in trespasses and sins, &c. by nature the children of wrath, even as well as others. Ye were without Christ; being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise; having no hope, and without God in the world.-Eph. ii. 1.

No whoremonger, nor unclean person, &c. hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, and of God, &c. Because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience (or unbelief).· Eph. v. 5, 6. Colos. iii. 5, 6. Heb. xiii. 4. Many walk, &c. whose end is destruction.-Phil. iii. 18, 19.

When they say peace, &c. then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.-1 Thess. v. 3.

The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, &c. taking vengeance on them who know not God, and who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and the glory of his power. When, &c.-2 Thess. i. 7-9. Heb. x. 26, 27.

To them who are unbelieving is nothing pure, &c.—Tit. i. 15.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the

Judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? &c. Where shall the ungodly and sinner appear?-1 Pet. iv. 17, 18.

The Lord knoweth how, &c. to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment, to be punished, &c. The day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.-2 Pet. ii. 9. iii. 7. Jude 15.

Ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.—1 John iii. 15.

And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bond-man, and every freeman, hid themselves in the dens, and in the rocks, &c. and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us; and hide us from the face of him who sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?-Rev. vi. 15-17.

Whosoever was not found in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.-Rev. xx. 15.

The fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable, &c. shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death, &c. There shall in no wise enter into the New Jerusalem, any thing that defileth or worketh abomination, or maketh a lie.-Rev. xxi. 8. 27.

For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, &c.-Rev. xxii. 15.

FOURTHLY, Under what Case the Law concludes Men.

SECT. I. Under Sin, and Guilt. IF thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities; O Lord, who shall stand?Ps. cxxx. 3. Job ix. 1, 2.

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one who accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.-John v. 45.

We have before proved (or charged) both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; as it is written, There is none righteous, &c. What things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped; and all the world may become guilty before God (or subject to the judgment of God), &c. There is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.-Rom. iii. 9, 10. 19. 22, 23.

Where no law is, there is no transgression. Rom. iv. 15.

Until the law, sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed, when there is no law, &c. The law entered, that the offence might abound, &c.-Rom. v. 13. 20. Gal. iii. 19.

I had not known sin but by the law, &c. without the law, sin was dead. I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died, &c. That sin might appear sin, &c. and by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. Rom. vii. 79. 13.

For God hath concluded them all (or shut them up together) in unbelief, &c.-Rom. xi. 32.

The strength of sin is the law.1 Cor. xv. 56.

The scripture hath concluded all men under sin.-Gal. iii. 22. Rom. v. 12. Ps. cxliii. 2.

We know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; shewing this, that the law is not made for a rightbut for the lawless and disobedient: for the ungodly, &c. 1 Tim. i. 8-10.

Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all, &c.-James ii. 10.

SECT. II. Under the Curse thereof. CURSED be he, who confirmeth not

all the words of this law to do them; and, &c.-Deut. xxvii. 26.

If thou wilt not hearken, &c. to do all his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee, &c. all these curses shall come upon thee. Cursed shalt thou, &c.-Deut. xxviii. 15, &c.

Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Cursed be the man who obeyeth not, &c.-Jer. xi, 3, 4.

For as many as are of the works of the law, are under the curse; for it is written, Cursed is every one who continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.-Gal. iii. 10.

SECT. III. The Deeds of the Law, or Sacrifices under it, cannot justify, or purge from Sin; but still leave Sinners under Guilt, Condemnation, and Wrath.

How should man be just with God (or before God)? If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.-Job ix. 2, 3.

If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?-Prov. xxxv. 7.

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire.-Ps. xl. 6, 7.

Enter not into judgment, &c. for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.-Ps. cxliii. 2.

Ye who kindle a fire, that compass yourselves, &c. walk in the light of your fire, &c. ye shall lie down in sorrow. Isa. 1. 11.

When ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants, &c.-Luke xvii. 10.

The parable of such who trusted in themselves, that they were righteous, &c. Two men went up into the temple, &c. The publican went down to his house justified rather than the Pharisee, who boasted much of his doings. All these things have I kept from my youth; Christ said, Yet lackest thou 20-23. Matt. iii. 9. one thing, &c.-Luke xviii. 9-14.

There is one who accuseth you,
