EXPLANATIONS.

(0) Lev. 21 chap. 17--20 ver. This was shewn in the law, to shew that the woman's seed should be free from all blemishes, and was the head of the church, and the saviour of man's body. Eph. 5 chap. 23 ver.

90

Thou shalt circumcise the flesh of thy foreskin unto me. [p]

91

Thou shalt circumcise thy male children, or cause them to be done, on the eighth day. [q]

(p) Ezekiel, 9 chap. 4, 5, & 6 ver. "And the Lord said unto the man with the writer's inkhorn-Go through the city, and set a mark the foreupon heads * of the men, that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others he said, Go ye after him through the city, and slay; but come not near any man upon whom is the mark."

(9) Genesis, 17 chap. 1, 10-14 vers. "The Lord appeared unto Abraham, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God! walk before me, and be thou perfect. This is my covenant which ye shall keep, between me and you, and thy seed after thee: Every man-child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me

and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man-child in your generations. And my covenant shall be in your flesh, for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man-child, whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from among his people, he hath broken my covenant." Exodus, 4 chap. 24, 25, & 26 ver. "The Lord met Moses, and sought to kill him. Then Zipporah, his wife,

took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision."

Joshua, 5 chap. 2 ver. "The Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel, the second time.”

Luke, 2 chap. 21 ver. Jesus, the woman's seed was circumcised on the eighth day.

Romans, 15 chap. 8 ver. He "was a minister of the circumcision, for the truth of God, to confirm the promises inade unto the fathers."

3 chap. 1, & 2 ver. "What profit is there of circumcision? Much every way."

2 chap. 25 ver. "Circumcision verily profiteth if thou keep the Law."

Galatians, 2 chap. 7 ver. "The Gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto Paul, as the Gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter."

The Hebrews, though they were circumcised, yet were cut off, because, they not having the fulness of the Spirit of God, but by measure, they kept not his Law; therefore he appointed them to give unto him beasts, as sin-offerings, upon which he forgave them; yet he only saved their souls, their bodies died.

But when the woman's seed came, he made an end of sacrificing beasts for sin, by the sacrifice of his own body, that whosoever should believe in him, his blood should be for the ransom of their souls; but the Hebrews, who were circumcised, believed him not; so he gave them up till she which travailed should bring forth, and be called to the Gentiles, who were uncircumcised, that if they believed in him, and did the righteousness of the Law, their uncircum

cision should be counted for circumcision till their fulness. Touching the preserving of their souls.

Micah, 5 chap. 3 ver. "Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth."

Isaiah 11 chap. 10 ver. "And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious."

And this character the woman's seed, was of the Gentiles, according to the flesh, by Ruth the Moabitess: of whose seed be came ;-she being the wife of Mahlon, and he dying without a heir, Boaz of the tribe of Judah, his kinsman, married his wife, and raised up seed to him, of which seed came David, from whence descended Jesus: so that he was then by promise set up as an ensign for the Gentiles.

Ruth, 4 chap. 9, 10, & 11 vers. "And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have purchased Ruth the Moabitess to be my wife. And all the people, and the elders, that were in the gate, said, We are witnessess. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Beth-lehem."

Which agrees with the words of Micah, 5 chap. 2 ver. "But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel."

Abraham was of the Gentiles after the flesh, but surnamed a Hebrew. Jesus was of the Gentiles, by descending from Ruth, the Gentile wo

Romans, 11 chap. 26 & 27 ver. "And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins."

But the Gentiles, not having the fulness of my Spirit, were like the Hebrews, they sinned again, so I appointed them to offer unto me bread and wine, as a likeness of the offering of his body and blood being renewed.

But now, the fulness of the Gentiles being come, I will give the fulness of my Spirit to all who ask, and my law they will fulfil, and also the righteousness thereof; and will not need any other sacrifice or likeness, as a renewal of the sacrifice of the body and blood of Jesus. And they will be circumcised, and keep my covenant, and their bodies will never die; but be made like unto his.

Ephesians, 5 chap. 23 ver. "For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the Saviour of the body."
