NEWS FROM THE CHURCHES.

Jamestown, Ohio, September 15, 1839. Our streets have been crowded with vehicles of conveyance of all sorts for two or three days. The Mad River Baptist Association is in session two miles from the village, and the Episcopal Methodists have a camp-meeting within a mile or two from town. One would be led to suppose that all the people are worshippers, seeing the rush and seeming eagerness manifeste 1 by them to get to the places of meeting

We have had preaching in the village every night, by some one of the preachers who are attending the Association; and I have had some of their Elders and Deacons around my fireside, and have conversed freely with them, and I am happy to say that much of that discord which has heretofore prevailed among us is giving way. The spirit of com. promise in matters of opinion seems to be diffusing itself. We had an excellent discourse by Elder Moore last evening, from Ephesians, particularly these words,-"Be not drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit." The spoaker was happy in his illustrations of the indwelling of the Spirit, and he did not force the Spirit to dwell in a foul house, (as the manner of some is,) but clearly showed that the house (human heart) must first be cleansed from all pollutions, or rather pollutors. This he illustrated by the cleansing of the Temple, and the driving out of the dove-sellers and money changers; and he was very happy in his illustration of the manner of grieving the Spirit and forcing it to desert the heart. This he illustrated by a house of entertaininent that took in a traveller, and after wards admitted drunkards, swearers, gamblers, thieves, robbers, &c. to the grief and annoyance of the traveller, so that he left the inn, and sought a more quiet and peaceable habitation.

He also drew a clear line of distinction between those miraculous powers and gifts of the Spirit which were bestowed on the few, and that indwelling of the Spirit which was bestowed on all the children of God. Elder Moore, as a teacher, is not excelled by many. He is an excellent man.

The strictures of the Rev. R. W. Landis on the new version of the New Testament is being republished in all the oppostion papers. The Western Recorder, at Zanesville, has copied them from the Biblical Recorder. I requested the Editor to publish the Preface to the third edition; but do not know whether he will comply or not.

Brother John Taffe is expected here this week to hold a meeting.
M. WINANS.
Boon County, Missouri, September 30, 1839.

I do not remember the date of my last letter to you, but I think it was just after my return from Fayette, on the first Lord's day of this month, where there were five additions. On the second Lord's day Brother Joseph Coons and myself were in the city of Jefferson, where four were added to the Lord. The following Friday old brother B. W. Stone reached my house from Illinois The next day we commenced operations in Columbia: on Sunday there were 5 additions. On Monday we began at Friendship-a new congregation about 10 miles north of Columbia. The meeting was continued there and in its vicinity four days, during which time there were 24 additions. On Saturday we began a three days' meeting at Bear Creek, brother Stone and other teaching brethren with us. Fifteen additions during the meeting. The next day brother Wills was at Friendship again, where 5 others confessed and obeyed the Saviour, which makes 49 additions in about ten days, in the same vicinity, almost. Brothers Stone and Lee left on Wednesday for Rocheport and Fayette, and I trust their labors will be blessed of God. Several from the Baptist ranks have recently united with us. I pray that brotherly love aud Christian affection may increase among all saints. THOMAS M ALLEN.
