III. It belongeth to Synods and Councils, ministerially to determine controversies of faith, and cases of conscience; to set down rules and directions for the better ordering of the public worship of God, and government of his church; to receive complaints in cases of mal-administration, and authoritatively to determine the same: which decrees and determinations, if consonant to the word of God, are to he received with reverence and submission, not only for their agreement with the word, but also for the power whereby they are made, as being an ordinance of God, appointed thereunto in his word.c

IV. All Synods or Councils, since the apostles' times, whether general or particular, may err, and many have erred; therefore they are not to be made the rule of faith or practice, but to be used as a help in both.d

V. Synods and Councils are to handle or conclude nothing

Mat. 18:17, And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man, and a publican. v. 18, Verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth, shall be loosed in heaven. v. 19, Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth, as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. v. 20, For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

CHAP. XXXII. Of the State of Men after Death, and of the Resurrection of the Dead.

THE bodies of men after death return to dust and see corruption;a but their souls, (which neither die nor sleep) having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them. The souls of the righteous, being then made perfect in holiness, are received into the highest heavens, where they behold the face of God in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies; and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell, where they remain in torments and utter dark

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether these things were so. 1 Cor. 2:5, That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 2 Cor. 1:24, Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joys: for by faith ye stand.

V. Luke 12:13, And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. v. 14, And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge, or a divider over you? John 18:36, Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

I. a Gen. 3:19, In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return. Acts 13:36, For David, after he had serv ed his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption.

b Luke 23:43, And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise .Eccl. 12:7, Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

c Heb. 12:23, To the general assembly and church of the first-born which are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect. 2 Cor. 5:1, For we know, that if our earthly house of this tabernacleere dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. v. 6, Therefore we are always confident, knowing that whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: v. 8, We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Phil. 1:23, For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better. II. At the last day, such as are found alive shall not die, but be changed and all the dead shall be raised up with the selfsame bodies, and none other, although with different qualities, which shall be united again to their souls forever."

III. The bodies of the unjust shall, by the power of Christ, be raised to dishonor; the bodies of the just, by his Spirit, unto honour, and be made conformable to his own glorious body.g

CHAP. XXXIII. Of the last Judgment.

GOD hath appointed a day, wherein he will judge the world in righteousness by Jesus Christ,a to whom all power and

scended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.

Luke 16:23, And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. v. 24, And he cried, and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. unto the spirits in prison.

II. 1 Thess. 4:17, Then we which are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 1 Cor. 15:51, Behold, I shew you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, v. 52, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump, (for the trumpet shall sound,) and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Job 19:26, And though after my skin, worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God, v. 27, Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. 1 Cor. 15:42, So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption: v. 43, It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power: v. 44, It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

III. Acts 24:15, And have hope towards God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. John 5:28, Marvel not at this; for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, v. 29, And shall come forth, they that have done good unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 1 Cor. 15:43. judgment is given of the Father. In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged, but likewise all persons that have lived upon earth, shall appear before the tribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds, and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil,d

II. The end of God's appointing this day is for the manifestation of the glory of his mercy in the eternal salvation of the elect, and of his justice in the damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient. For then shall the righteous go into everlasting life, and receive that fulness of joy, and refreshing which shall come from the presence of the Lord; but the wicked, who know not God, and obey not the gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast into eternal torments, and be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.e

III. As Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there shall be a day of judgment, both to deter all men from

Amen.s

III. 2 Peter 3:11, Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness? v. 14, Wherefore beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, blameless. 2 Cor. 5:10. (See in letter d.) v. 11, Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also, are made manifest in your consciences. 2 Thess. 1:5, Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer. v. 6, Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; v. 7, And to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.
