THE CHANDOS PORTRAIT OF SHAKESPEARE.
The celebrated original portrait of which this engraving is an excellent reproduction, once belonged to Shakespeare's reputed son, Sir William Davenant, and afterwards to Betterton, the actor. It has been engraved and copied by many famous artists, notably: Vertue, Houbraken, and Kneller. It takes its name from the Duke of Chandos, into whose possession it came by marriage, and now belongs to the Buckingham family.
