ONSTRUCTIVE ORDER, Lists of Words, and the Readings of this edition are the same as in the original one, and so the two editions may be used in the same classes without inconvenience. Webster's latest Diacritical Marks and Watson's Combined Letters, Ou, ow, ch, sh, th, wh, and ng, are used, making a complete Phonic Alphabet.

SUCCESS IS SECURED by faithful and wisely directed efforts. Let the instructor determine first what Method to employ-whether the Alphabetic, or a combination of the Phonetic and the Alphabetic; the Word System, the Sentence System, a combination of the two-or a union of the best features of all.

IN REVIEW LESSONS, direct the attention of pupils to the Formation of Words, and teach the names and the sounds of the letters employed, by the use of questions; as, page 12, What is placed after a to form an? before an to form fan? after an to form and? etc. The letters should be taught alphabetically, pages 4 and 5; but let this be done gradually and without special effort.

THE READINGS, in large classes, should at first be written and printed on the blackboard and there mastered. Then let each pupil read the Lesson from the book. In following the Word System, the instructor will first read the sentences from the book, having only separate words printed on the board. After these are learned by the pupils, connected sentences will be read. In the Sentence System, entire sentences are first taught, and then the separate words.

AMERICAN SCRIPT, the latest and best, is used for an Alphabet and for several Readings, that the pupils may soon acquire facility in reading Writing. Opportunity is also thus afforded to train the eye and the hand in Slate Work and to improve the odds and ends of time.

IRST LESSONS for children here treat of familiar and pleasing objects. The words are simple, significant, similar in form and sound, and so classified that a knowledge of the preceding Lists must be of direct avail in learning those which follow. The book combines the best features of Object Lessons and affords like advantage for use with the Phonetic or Alphabetic Methods, or the Word or Sentence Systems..

PART FIRST contains 350 monosyllables, introduced at an average of 8 new words to a page. Each page is a Lesson, every second or thira Lesson a Review, and the Readings are a Series of Elocutionary Drills for the attainment of specific and obvious results. In the first 15 Lessons, each vowel represents but one of its sounds and nearly all silent letters are avoided.

PART SECOND is a General Review of Part First. It contains 330 additional words, arranged in Lists at the Heads of the Lessons, for Exercises in Pronunciation and Spelling. The Readings that are not wholly original are Adaptations of Standard Fables and other Clever Tales, rewritten in simple monosyllables.

THIS BOOK AIMS, by the fitness of its Lessons and the beauty of its Illustrations, to awaken the greatest interest possible to childhood, consistent with such guidance as tends to a gradual and systematic educational development.
