Will ye bunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come unto you? And will ye pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley, and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the sols alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies? Wherefore thus saith the Lord GoD, Behold, I am against your pillows, wherewith ye there hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms, and will let the Fouls go, even the souls that ye hunt to make them fly. Your kerchiefs also will I tear, and de- go thither; peradventure he can of the LORD: but I hate him; for liver my people out of your hand, and they shall be no more in your hand to be hunted; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom 1 Sam. ix, 6. And he said unto shew us our way that we should 1 Kings xviii, 4. For it was so, AND PERSECUTED. 1 Kings xxii, 7-9, 24-27. And Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him? And the king of Israel said Imlah, by whom we may enquire unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of he doth not prophesygood concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so. Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, Hasten hither Micaiah the son of Imiah. Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things; speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. Jer. xi, 21-23. Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand: Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine: And there shall be no remuant of them: for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation. Jer. xx, 1, 2. Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD. Jer. xxix, 25-29. Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is Ezek. lii, 25, 26. But thou, O son of man, behold, they shall put bands upon thee, and shall bind thee with them, and thou shalt not go out among them: And I will make thy tongue cleave to the root of thy mouth, that thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be to them a reprover; for they are a rebellious house. Amos vii, 12, 13, 16, 17. Also therefore hear thou the word of his land. Micah ii, 6. Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy: that they shall not take shame. they shall not prophesy to them, 1 Kings xlx, 14. And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 2 Chron. xxxvi, 16, 17. But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against hig people, till there was no remedy. Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age; he gave them all into his hand. Jer. xx, 3, 4. And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magor-missabib. For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it: and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword. Rom. xi, 2, 3. God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God have killed thy prophets, and against Israel, saying, Lord, they digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. James v, 10. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of sullering affliction, and of patience. DUTY OF THE PEOPLE. Zech. vii, 7. Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain? 1 Thess. v, 20. Despise not prophesyings. SIN OF UNBELIEF. 2 Kings vii, 1, 2. Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the LORD, TO.. morrow, about this time, shall a measure of fine flour be sold tor a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. 2 Chron. xxiv, 19. Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear. Jer. vii, 25-28. Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day, I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early, and sending them: Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but har dened their neck; they did worse than their fathers. Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them, but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee. But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth. Jer. xxv, 3, 4. From the thirteenth year of Joshua the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day. (that is the three and twentieth year.) the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened. And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear. become wind, and the word is not in them; thus shall it be done unto them. Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, house of Israel, saith the LORD: It is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose thou language knowest not, neither understandest what they say. Jer. xxix, 18, 19. And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the king doms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have an driven them: Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early, and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD. VII. FALSE PROPHETS. WARNINGS AGAINST THEM. Neh. vi, 8. 9. Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart. For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. Jer. xiv, 14. Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets pro Jer. xliii, 1-4. And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the LORD their God had sent him to them, even all these words. Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely; the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Gophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I comnot into Egypt to sojourn there:manded them, neither spake unto But Baruch the son of Neriah, setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away captives into Babylon. So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah. ITS PUNISHMENT. Neh. ix, 30. Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and them; they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. Jer. xxiii, 14-16, 21, 22, 25-28. I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evil-doers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as of as Gomorrah. Therefore thus Sodom, and the inhabitants there own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are proplets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my tell every man to his neighbour, name by their dreams, which they as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully.... Jer. xxviii, 14-17. For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him; and I have given him the beasts of the field also. Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah, The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie: Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD. So Hananiah the prophet died the same year, in the seventh month. Jer. xxix, 8. For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, diviners, that be in the midst of Let not your prophets and your you, deceive you, neither hearken to be dreamed. to your dreams which ye caused Matth. vii, 15. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Matth. xxiv, 11. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 2 Peter ii, 1. But there were people, even as there shall be false prophets also among the testifiedst against them by thy Saith the LORD of hosts concerning false teachers among you, who Spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gav the prophets, Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord themselves swift destruction est thou them into the hand of the them drink the water of gall: for that bought them, and bring upon people of the lands. And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am. would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in. And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobial and Sanballat had hired him. Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that My they might reproach me. God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear. thee upon the necks of them that I sumed them. Ezek. xxii, 28. And her prophets FLATTERERS. Jer. xxiii, 17, 18. They say still For Lam. il, 14. Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens, and causes of banishment. Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life. Ezek. xxi, 29. Whiles they see Vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee to bring stand in the battle in the day of GOD. ESPECIALLY IN TIME OF WAR. 1 Kings xxii 6, 11, 12. When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. 1 Kings xxil, 28. Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified; or let them hear, and say, It is truth. Jer. xxviii, 7-9. Nevertheless hear thou now this word that I speak in thine ears, and in the ears of all the people; the prophets that have been before me and before thee of old, prophesied both against many countries, and against great king doms, of war, and of evil, and of pestilence. The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him. Ezek. xiv. 9. And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet; and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
