1 John iv, 7, 8, 20, 21. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love. If a man say, I love God, and bateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. 1 John v, 2, 3. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments: for this is the love of God that we keep his commandments; and his commandments are not grievous. long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. ITS UNITY. Rom. xv, 4-7. For whatsoever things were written aforetime we, through patience and comfort were written for our learning; that of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another, according to Christ Jesus; That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us, to the glory of God. Eph. iv, 3. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 2 John 3-6. Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. I rejoiced greatly Phil. i, 27. Only let your converthat I found of thy children walk-sation be as it becometh the gospel ing in truth, as we have received of Christ; that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may a commandment from the Father. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the com mandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. 3 John 3, 4. For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. THE POWER OF THE Matt. xviii, 17. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican. 1 Cor. v, 2--5. And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. Phil. ii, 1, 2. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Phil. iv, 1, 2. Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. Col. iii, 15. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. ITS EVILS. Prov. xiv, 14. The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways; and a good man shall be satisfied from himself. Jer. ii, 17, 19. Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore, and see, that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GoD of hosts. Jer. xiii, 25. This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood. Ps. lxxviii, 57. But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow. Prov. xxiv, 16. For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fail into mischief. Isa. i. 4. They have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. Jer. v, 23. But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. Jer. vill, 4. 5. Moreover, thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return? Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. Hosea vi, 4. O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away. Hosea xi, 7. And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him. Mark iv, 16, 17. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: after ward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. Luke vill, 13. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. Gal. v, 7, 8, 10. Ye did run well; who did hinder you, that ye should not obey the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded; but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he WARNING TO BACKSLIDERS. Ps. xxxvi, 3. The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good. Rev. 11, 4. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. APOSTACY. canse they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters. Ezek. xviil, 24-26..... All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. Yet ye say, The way of the LORD is not equal Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. Ezek. xxxiii, 12, 13. Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth. When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousness his iniquity that he hath commitshall not be remembered; but for ted, he shall die for it. Hosea vii, 13. Woe unto them! struction unto them! because they for they have fled from me: dehave transgressed against me: though I have redeemned them, yet they have spoken lies against me. John xv, 6. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather and they are burned. them, and cast them into the fire, 1 Tim. v, 12. Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. Heb. vi, 4-6. For it is impossible for those who were once en lightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. Heb. x, 26, 27. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there Jer. xvii, 12, 13. For our God is a shall be written in the earth, be-consuming fire. VI. OTHER RESULTS AND BLESSINGS OF REDEMPTION. SALVATION IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. Exod. xiv, 13, 14. And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will sher you to-day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to-day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. 2 Sam. xxii, 36. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation; and thy gentleness hath made me great. P3. xxxvii, 39. But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD; he is their strength in the time of trouble. Isa. xxvi, 1. In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city: Balvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Jer. iii, 23. Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel KNOWLEDGE. 180, il, 5. O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD. Hos. viii, 2. Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee. John iii, 9-12. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him. Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our wit ness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things? Rom. xv, 14, 15. And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God. 1 Cor. x. 14, 15. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. Eph. i, 18, 19. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who belleve, according to the working of his nighty power. Col. i, 9. For this cause we also, rince the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. 2 Pet. 1, 12. Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, tablished in the present truth. though ye know them, and be es GRACE. Job xvil, 9, 10. The righteous also shall hold on his way; and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you. Ps. cxxxviii, 8. The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me, thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. Prov. iv, 18. But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Hos. vi, 2, 3. After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: is going forth is prepared as the moruing; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth. John xv, 8. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. far spent, the day is at hand: let Rom. xiii, 12, 13. The night is us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 2 Cor. iii, 18. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Phil. i, 8-11. For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere, and without offence, till the day of Christ; Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. Phil. iii, 15, 16. Let us there 2 Thess. i, 3. We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth. 2 Pet. 1, 5-8. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ASSURANCE. afraid, I will trust in thee. In Ps. Ivi, 3, 4, 11. What time I am God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. Ps. cxviii, 6. 7. The LORD is on taketh my part with them that my side; I will not fear; what can help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. man do unto me? The LORD Prov. iii, 25, 26. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep by foot from being taken. Prov. xxix, 25. The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. Isa. xxxii, 17. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance for ever. Isa. 1, 7, 8. For the Lord GoD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. Isa, li 12. I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the soa of mau which shall be made as grass. Isa. Ivil, 11. And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast lied, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest Lie not? Luke 1, 77. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins. Luke xii, 32. Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Col. ii, 2. That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of un Job xl, 4-6. For thou hast said, My doctrine is puro, and I am clean in thine eyes. But Oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee; And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth. Job xxix, 18. Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand. Job xxxiii, 8, 9. Surely thou hast derstanding, to the acknowledg-spoken in mine hearing, and I ment of the mystery of God, and have heard the voice of thy words, of the Father, and of Christ. saying, I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. Heb. vi, 11. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence, to the full assurance of hope unto the end. Heb. x. 35. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. Heb. xiii, 6. So that we may boldly say. The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. 1 John ii, 28. And now, little children, abide in him, that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 1 John ili, 19, 21. And hereby we know we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 1 John iii, 16-18. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and be that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love cast eth out fear; because fear bath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. FORMS OF SELF-RIGHTEOUS Job xxxv, 2. Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God's? Ps. x, 5, 6. His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he pufleth at them. He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. Jer. xlix, 4, 16. Wherefore glorlest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me? Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock,that holdest the height of the hill; though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD. Amos vi, 3. Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near. Luke xvi, 15. And he said unto them. Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. 2 Cor. x, 17, 18. But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth. Gal. vi, 3. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. Rev. iii, 17. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and Prov. xxx, 12. There is a gener-poor, aud blind, and naked ation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. Isa. xxviii, 15. Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us:for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves. Isa. xliii, 26. Put me in remembrance; let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified. Isa. xlvil, 7. And thou saidst, 1 shall be a lady for ever: so that thy heart, neither didst rememthou didst not lay these things to ber the latter end of it. Isa. lvii, 10. Thou art wearled in the greatness of thy way; yet saidst thou not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of thine hand; therefore thou wast not grieved. thine heart, after that the LORD these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. Not for thy righteousness, or for the smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day." Jer. ii, 35. Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me: behold, I 1 Sam. xv, 13. And Samnel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. Job xxxii, 1. 2. So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram; against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified bimself rather than God. Mal. iii, 7. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have and I will return unto you, saith not kept them. Return unto me, the LORD of hosts.
