THE patronage with which THE OXFORD REVIEW has been honoured warrants the expectation that it will enjoy a long and prosperous existence. Its circulation is at present not exceeeded by more than one of the Reviews published in the Metropolis; and if its Conductors may calculate on an increase in the number of its patrons, in the ratio in which they have latterly been able to add to the number and obvious ability of their Critical Corps, this Review will ere long enjoy a reputation as extensive and as pre-eminent as that of the ancient and honoured University whence it derives its

name.

The completion of the first volume affords a suitable opportunity for comparing the professions under which its Conductors first invited the attention of the Public, with their subsequent performance.

It will be found that they have given a full, candid and honest account of the books which have been published during the last six months; that the several articles afford clearer views of the contents of the various publications than perhaps are to be met with in any other Critical Journal; and that none of their criticisms have violated good manners, or outraged public decency by personal animosity or party rancour.
