PREFACE.

THE candid and favourable reception which an indulgent public gave to the author's "Account of the Campaign in the West Indies in 1794," has inspired him with courage to lay before them a narrative of some important subsequent events of the war in a very different part of the world, which his active destiny has afforded him an opportunity of recording as an eyewitness. In this work, as well as in the former, it is on the result of peculiar and accidental opportunity that he relies for his passport. He is conscious his habits and pursuits have little qualified him for the

claims of literary merit.

Placed as he was in the midst of a battle as splendid and extraordinary as the page of history has ever recorded, an attendant of the chase which preceded it, and of many interesting occurrences and scenes which the shores of the Mediterranean exhibited for nearly two years after its termination, he daily minuted
