gave a hearty invitation to hold the next Conference in that city, and the invitation was unanimously accepted.

A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.

CIVIC RECEPTION.

On the evening of Friday, 9th September, the delegates were welcomed in the Education Room of the Central Hall by Sir Robert and Lady Bruce, and immediately afterwards they were accorded a civic reception in the Main Hall by the Mayor (Councillor A. H. Domleo), who was accompanied by the Mayoress and a number of Aldermen and Councillors. The platform party was preceded by Piper C. M'Brayne, of Newark, who was in Highland costume. In an interesting reply to the welcome tendered by the Mayor, Sir Robert Bruce mentioned that an edition of Burns's Poems had been printed in Derby in 1844, and as he understood there was no copy of this edition in the Town Library of Derby, he asked the Mayor to accept, on behalf of the community, a copy which he had brought with him. He also conveyed to the Mayor, Aldermen, and Councillors the warmest thanks of the Federation for their gracious welcome to Derby.

MUSICAL RECITAL.

The civic reception was followed by a musical recital sustained by the Chelsea Singers (from London), who submitted an entirely Scottish programme to the manifest delight of their large audience. The singers were dressed in costumes of the Elizabethan period, and presented a very picturesque appearance.

Sir Robert Bruce complimented the singers on their fine performance, and at his call they were awarded a hearty vote of thanks, which was acknowledged by Mr. Bruce Flegg, one of the party.

The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" made a fitting termination to a most enjoyable concert.

LUNCHEON.

At the luncheon which followed the Conference the toast of "The Burns Federation" was proposed by the Mayor, and responded to by Sir Joseph Dobbie.

MOTOR DRIVES.

The delegates greatly enjoyed two motor tours through the beautiful Derbyshire dales in the vicinity-one, on Saturday afternoon, to Belper, Cromford, Viagellia, Grangemill, Parwich, Alsop-en-le-Dale, Dovedale, Ashbourne, and Kedleston; and the other, on Sunday afternoon, to Matlock, Rowsley, Chatsworth Park, Bakewell, Winster, Grangemill, Ashbourne, and Brailsford.

CHURCH SERVICE.

A special service for the Federation was held in Greenhill Presbyterian Church on Sunday forenoon, and was well attended by the delegates.

"The

The Rev. John Bell, M.A., who conducted the service, took as the subject of his sermon, Burns's poem Vision," and his masterly analysis of the poem made a great impression upon his hearers.

The local arrangements for the Conference were in the hands of a thoroughly competent Committee, and Capt. Charles Carmichael, on whom as Secretary much of the work fell, had the satisfaction of knowing that his arrangements had passed off without a single hitch.
