PREFACE

THIS book aims to present a considerable body of Old Testament narrative in a form convenient both for the general reader and for the student of literature. The present edition is intended especially to meet the demands of schools and colleges for a definite collection of these narratives, compact in form, yet reasonably comprehensive in scope. The selections cover the recommendation adopted in New York City, February 22, 1909, by the National Conference on Uniform Entrance Requirements in English, in the following form: "The Old Testament, comprising at least the chief narrative episodes in Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Daniel, together with the books of Ruth and Esther." This action of the National Conference has deep significance. For years the ignorance of the Bible on the part of students in school and college has attracted constantly increasing attention. In heading with the Old Testament its list of books for school reading, the National Conference has publicly emphasized the importance to every student of knowledge of the Bible as literature.

In preparing this volume the general aim has been to select passages interesting in themselves and important in the development of the whole
