Cassell's Latin-English Dictionary. Thoroughly revised

and corrected, and in part re-written by J. R. V. MARCHANT, M.A., Master at St. Paul's School, and formerly Scholar of Wadham College, Oxford.

In this edition of CASSELL'S LATIN DICTIONARY the English-Latin portion has been omitted, as not being generally useful, while at the same time the Latin-English portion has been increased by about one-half its original length. Thus it is practically a new work. Much care has been expended in tracing the development of the meanings of the words, and many examples have been added. The syntax, too, has received greater attention, and the etymology of words has been brought in o accordance with modern research.

CASSELL'S NATIONAL LIBRARY.

"IT has often been said that the Victorian age will stand out in bold relief in the pages of history as that period when the genius and inventive skill of man enabled him to harness the material elements of Nature so as to make them powerful agents in doing the world's work and in contributing to the comfort, peace, and prosperity of the human race. This is not only true as a general principle, but in no other way is it possible, on economic and commercial grounds, to understand how fifty-two volumes, comprising nearly ten thousand pages of clear, readable print, could be produced, and that, too, in neat chaste paper covers, at a cost of threepence each, or the entire set for the sum of thirteen shillings. This is an enduring monument to the enterprise, the public spirit, and, we might also say, the philanthropic zeal, of the firm of Cassell and Co., to whose unceasing energy and activity we owe the National Library?'

"During the year 1886 there issued from the printing press of this great firm a weekly volume of 192 pages on the average, carefully edited by Professor Henry Morley, at the small sum we have named. Mr. Morley's name is in itself a guarantee for the nature and character of the works of which the first year's series consists. Hence, we find that the wisest possible discretion and judgment have been exercised in the selection by the editor of works of the most varied character, representing all periods and forms of thought, so as to meet and gratify the varying tastes and intellectual appetites which are to be found in the reading public.

6

"A glance at the titles of the fifty-two volumes published during 1886 will show at once how widely diversified the selection has been made, and how far the publishers have contributed to the educational pabulum of the age. In history and biography we have Lord Macaulay's 'Warren Hastings' and Francis Bacon'-works of an undying interest, and written in our great historian's best and most chaste style. Plutarch, again, has his best biographies reproduced, for our instruction and profit, in three volumes, which include the lives of Alexander the Great,' Julius Cæsar,' 'Alcibiades, Coriolanus, Mark Antony,' &c., which the lovers of Shakespeare-from which source some of our great dramatist's materials were drawn-cannot fail to appreciate very highly indeed. To the same order belong the autobiography of 'Benjamin Franklin,' the romantic yet deeply interesting 'Life and Adventures of Baron Trenck,'' Pepys's Diary'-covering a remarkable year of our history, 1662-1663-and the characteristic yet marvellously instructive Lives of the Poets' by the great Dr. Samuel Johnson. English classical poetry, too, has not been overlooked, as the series includes Byron's 'Childe Harold,' Scott's Lady of the Lake,' and Milton and Pope's 'Earlier Poems.' Religion and philosophy are most appropriately represented in Bunyan's 'Grace Abounding,' Latimer's Sermons on the Card,' Luther's Table Talk,' Bacon's Wisdom of the Ancients,' Burke's Thoughts on the Present Discontents.' Discovery and enterprise come also well to the front in the shape of Maundeville's Travels and Voyages,' Hakluyt's 'Voyagers' Tales'-a quaint and curious relic, Marco Polo's 'Voyages,' Pinkerton's Early Australian Voyages-and that racy and amusing work, Dr. Johnson's 'Journey to the Western Isles.'

"Dramatic literature has not been overlooked, for here we have Goldsmith's charming comedies, and Shakespeare's immortal tragedies of 'Hamlet' and 'Macbeth,' &c. Neither is fiction left out of this year's selection, nor yet pure literature, as Horace Walpole, Edmund Burke, Cowley, Steele, Addison, Sydney Smith, Coleridge, and even Goethe, have all been laid under contribution to enrich and render attractive this wonderful series of cheap volumes.

"The books now before us are great storehouses of the knowledge which the observation and experience and research which successive generations have been accumuláting. They contain much of the best thoughts of the best men who have flourished in the past. By their price, too, they disregard the conventional distinction, which may shut a man out from personal intercourse with the great and the gifted, and they will take up their abode as lovingly in the cottage as in the palace, with the peasant as well as with the prince. Their variety, too, offers a companionship to every mood of mind a man can possibly experience-whether it be of joy or sorrow, tranquillity or distraction.

"Not only, we ought to add, are these great authors brought within the reach of all, but in every case we have from the pen of Professor Morley a brief, yet clear and appropriate introduction, in which the life of the author is sketched, and the nature and character of the work tersely and vigorously delineated.

"The publication of this series of standard works 'removes the reproach' so frequently referred to of late years, that the world's classics are more easily available for the poorer classes of France, Germany, Italy, and Spain than for those of England.' The volumes issued by the Universal Bibliothek' and the 'Bibliothèque Nationale' on the Continent now number many thousands, and their cheapness puts them within the reach of every French and German peasant. What has been done by these series is now being done for the Englishspeaking race all over the world by Cassell's National Library. These publishers are truly conferring a national benefit, the outcome of which may be far-reaching in its influence and power for good.

"There is one feature of the possibilities of this series to which we have not yet referred, but which touches our own constituency with a real and vital interest. Not a few of the books already published are marvellously suited to be used as reading books in the higher standards of our inspected schools. Their occasional use would add a freshness and a life to the reading lesson, say of a Sixth or Seventh Standard, which not a few teachers would appreciate with great gratitude indeed. Many of Her Majesty's Inspectors speak highly of their suitability in this respect, and warmly commend their use; and it is a genuine pleasure to us to welcome this recommendation. Their cheapness, too, makes their utility as school reading books all the more welcome.

"In conclusion, we do most heartily endorse the observations of a provincial contemporary, which says:'The elementary schools are training up a great generation of readers; and if School Boards and Councils of -Education are creating the taste, Messrs. Cassell and Co. are already anticipating the demand, and furnishing the means by which the rising generation may be stimulated to nobler efforts and to higher intellectual pursuits.' May success attend the 'National Library.'
