A messuage and farm called Dean-Houses in the said parish, let to Elizabeth and Ann Clough, 110li.

A messuage and farm called Three Mile Bridge farm in the said parish, let to Andrew Carr, 100li.

The three last farms pay 4li. yearly to the vicar of the parish of St. Nicholas, Newcastle, as a modus for hay tithe.

Also a colliery under the said lands let to Sir Henry Liddell, bart., Edward Wortley alias Montague, esq., George Liddell, esq., and John Ord, esq., at 150li. a year, till Lady-day, 1747, and 200li. a year after that, for the remainder of a term, beside a further sum for every ten of coles as stated in the lease.

All which said farms and colliery are charged with an annuity of 100li. to Robert Ord, esq., and his heirs.

Of which said premises I am seised for life.

CXXVIII. Register of the estate of THOMAS MITCHELL* OF NEWBROUGH IN THE COUNTY OF York, gent. [No date.]

The manor of Nafferton, now in my own possession, of no yearly value at present.

Two messuages at Nafferton, one possessed by Jasper Gibson at the rent of 152li., the other of George Forster at 76li.

1662. By his marriage with Anne, daughter and heir of John Legh of Middleton in the parish of Rothwell, Yorkshire, he obtained that property.

In other courts Ralph Brandling registered property in Jarrow, Newcastle, Middleton, and in Hunslet. He apparently died 20th June, 1749. cf. Estcourt and Payne, English Catholic Nonjurors, p. 312. Dying without issue, he is stated to have devised Middleton to his brother Charles. See Register No. CXXXIII; Surtees, Durham, vol. ii, p. 91.

* On the 8th April, 1652, William Swinburne of Nafferton was certified to be a Papist delinquent, and his estate appeared on the 18th November of that year in the third Act for Sale. On the 31st May, 1653, he was fined, and on the 13th July, Nafferton and other places were discharged from sequestration. Welford, Royalist Compositions, p. 350. More correctly described as of Capheaton, he died an aged man, 6th November, 1653, when Nafferton would seem to have passed to the eldest son of his second marriage, William Swinburne of Halywell, co. Nafferton subsequently passed into the possession of the Cholmeleys of Brandsby, whose pedigree may be found in Dugdale's Visitation of Yorkshire, with Additions, by J. W. Clay, vol. ii, pp. 248–252.

* Ralph Clavering of Callaley, eldest son of Ralph Clavering of that place (see Register No. XCVIII), was born on the 29th June, 1727, and baptised under the name of Ralph Peter. He was married three times: first, at St. George's, Hanover Square, 12th July, 1757, to Eliza, daughter of James Egan of London; secondly, in Paris, August, 1764, to Frances, daughter of John Lynch of Bordeaux; and thirdly, at St. James', London, 20th June, 1767, to Mary, daughter of Edward Walsh of London. Dying at St. Omer 4th October, 1787, he was succeeded by his eldest son John [Aloysius] Clavering, who died 1st December, 1826, s.p.

Edward [John Henry] Clavering, who succeeded on his half-brother's death in 1826, married 10th October, 1803, Mary, daughter of J. O'Byrne, and was succeeded by his son Edward John Clavering of Callaley, who died 3rd November, 1876, in whom expired the last direct male heir of this very ancient house. In the following year Callaley was sold by Mr. Clavering's only daughter and her husband. The junior, and as far as is known, the only other branch, the Claverings of Axwell, lingered until 9th November, 1893, when, on the death of Sir Henry Clavering, the baronetcy likewise expired. cf. Registers No. XL and [No. 7].

A farm called Low House in Berwick Hill, let by my late brother to James Charlton, elder, at 79li. 10s., with allowance for lime, 7li. 10s., as on the next farms, making a reduced rent of 72li.

A messuage, farm, &c., in Berwick Hill, let by my said late. brother to Ann Cutter, widow, at 73li. 15s., with an allowance for lime, making a reduced rent of 70li.

The South-side farm of Berwick Hill, let to Richard and Joseph Reay at 117li., with an allowance for lime, making a reduced rental of IIoli.

*Thomas Stapleton alias Errington, fifth son of Nicholas Errington of Ponteland, afterwards Stapleton, and second son of his second wife Mary, daughter of Thomas Sandys of Worcester (see Register No. XXXI), was baptised at Castle Gate, 8th February, 1701-2, and succceded his uterine brother John circa 1749.

*The lady whose register is abstracted in the text was Winifred, third wife and widow of Nicholas Stapleton alias Errington of Ponteland and Carlton (see Register No. XXXII), and daughter of John White of London. She was married in 1737, and died 29th March, 1761. Her eldest surviving son, Thomas Stapleton alias Errington, sold his patrimonial estate at Ponteland, and died 25th April, 1821.

†Thomas Riddell, born 1727, who succeeded his father, Thomas Riddell of Swinburn Castle, in March, 1754, married, in 1760, Elizabeth Margaret, daughter of Edward Horsley Widdrington of Felton (see Register No. LXXVII), and after his narriage enrolled another register dealing with her estate. Register No. cxxxvIII.

* Charles Brandling, whose register is abstracted in the text, though described as of Felling, seems to have made his principal residence at North Seaton in the parish of Woodhorn, where he died, and was buried at Woodhorn 11th December, 1734. By his marriage with Margaret, daughter of John Grey of Howick, he had (perhaps with other) issue two sons and two or three daughters, all baptised or buried at Woodhorn, viz. Ralph Brandling, baptised 4th May, 1706, who succeeded his father; John, baptised 17th July, 1708, buried 14th November, 1717; Dorothy, baptised 12th October, 1697, married at Horton 2nd April, 1727, William Archer of North Seaton; Anne, buried 5th November, 1717; and perhaps another named Mary.

From Ralph Brandling, eldest son of the above-named Charles, sprang the Brandlings sometime of Gosforth. See Register No. cxxvII; Surtees, Durham, vol. ii, p. 91.
