* Jasper Gibson of Stonecroft, whose register is abstracted in the text, was eldest son of Thomas Gibson of Stotsford, and grandson of Jasper Gibson of Stonecroft. See Register No. ci. He purchased Stonecroft in 1802 from his kinsman, George Gibson of Stagshaw Close-house, but in 1816 conveyed his property to trustees for sale. The latter sold Stotsford to John Robson of Allenheads. New History of Northumberland, vol. iv, p. 65; vol. x, p. 156. Rev. John Hodgson's History of Northumberland, part ii, vol. iii, p. 395.

[No. 1.]—Register of the estate of ANNE FAWCETT OF BOLTON, CO. NORTHUMBERLAND, dated 18 April, 1717.†

A mortgage for 120li. odd shillings, chargeable upon a messuage or house, malt barn, malt kiln, and their appurtenances, let to Eliza Gallimore, widow, and Richard Stow, merchant, being on the south side of a street called Bridge Street in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Power of Attorney, 18 April, 1717, to Robert Johnson and Benjamin Greive.

N.B. The house abovenamed was mortgaged to the said Anne by a protestant, and she has since the registry assigned the mortgage, as I am credibly informed, to Eliza Gallimore, a protestant of the Church of England. John Sibbit, Town clerk.

[No. 2.] Register of the estate of WALTER ASTLEY OF BERWICKUPON-TWEED, GENT., dated 20 April, 1717.‡

A burgage or tenement and garden thereto belonging, with the appurtenances, now in the possession of FitzMaurice Gifford, esq.,§ William Nesbit, yeoman, and of me Walter Astley, being on the east side of a street called Hidehill in Berwick-upon-Tweed, of the yearly value of Ioli.

*The original certificates, of which abstracts are given in this Supplement, were enrolled in the proper courts for Islandshire and Norhamshire, then parcel of the county palatine of Durham, and in the courts for the boroughs of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed, have not been recovered. The abstracts have been prepared from the contemporary copies of the originals now preserved in the Public Record Office.

§ Fitzmaurice Gifford, town major of Berwick, married Mary, widow of William Carnaby of Halton and daughter and sole heir of William Armorer of Belford and of Middleton in Bamburghshire. She was buried at Berwick 19th August, 1710, and he at the same place 2nd December, 1731. By his will dated 29th November, 1731, Fitzmaurice Gifford gave to Francis Annesley of the Middle Temple, esq., all his claim to the estate of the Earl of Kerry, in Ireland; to his natural son, George Gifford, his corn tithes of Swinhoe; to Dr. Matthew Forster, his gun, &c.

[No. 3.] Register of the estate of MARY COLLINGWOOD, WIFE AND ATTORNEY OF LUKE COLLINGWOOD, LATE OF BERWICK-UPONTweed, gent., dated 26 April, 1717.*

A burgage or tenement with the appurtenances let to Mathew Dods, on the west side of a street called Hidehill in Berwick upon Tweed, of the yearly value of 5li. 15s.

[No. 6.] Register of the estate of ANNE THORNTON OF NETHERWITTON, CO. NORTHUMBERLAND, WIDOW OF NICHOLAS THORNTON, LATE OF THE SAME PLACE, ESQ., dated 1 May, 1717.*

A messuage, burgage, or tenement on the north side of the street called Old Elvet in the parish of St. Oswald, co. Durham, four rooms whereof I have let to Mrs. Mary Morland, for one year, at a yearly rent of 5li. The fee simple of which messuage is in John Blenkinsopp, gent., in trust for me and my heirs.

A third of the tithes of corn, hay, wool and lamb, and all other tithes in the parish of Chester-in-the-street, as my dower.

[No. 7.] Register of the estate of JOHN CLAVERING OF CALLALEY, CO. NORTHUMBERLAND, ESQ., dated 1 May, 1717.†

The manor of Duddoe, with appurtenances, in the parish of Norham, now in the possession of the mortgagees.

The capital messuage of Duddoe alias Dudhoe, and the hamlet of Green Lawes with the buildings, barns, stables, orchards, gardens, mill, curtilage, lands, tenements and hereditaments belonging thereto in the parish of Norham, let to William Avery by the mortgagees at a yearly rent of 180li.

Of which said manor and lands, &c., I have only a right of redemption for the term of my life, the same being subject to a forfeited mortgage for 4,300li. The premises are subject to taxes, repairs, and parochial duties, which are paid by the landlord, and to a castle-rent of 4li. 13s., and other quitrents.
