* Sir Carnaby Haggerston of Haggerston, baronet, received his christian name from the second wife of his grandfather, Jane, daughter and heir of Sir William Carnaby. Being childless, her estates were added to and absorbed in the Haggerston patrimonial estates. Sir Carnaby Haggerston succeeded his grandfather in 1721, and died in 1756. See Registers Nos. CXXXIV and CXLII.

In Branxton parish: Several messuages and lands, the tithes of corn, hay, wool and lamb, and other tithes, great and small, let by Edward Haggerstone, esq., to James Burne at 105li., which he receives, paying out of it 20li. a year to the curate of Branxton, and after the payment of taxes applying the residue to the payment of IIli. a year rent-charge due to himself, and the interest of 1,100li., subject to the equity of redemption in me the said Sir Cuthbert Haggerson.

West Crookes and now called Crook-house in Bolsden and Lowick, of the yearly value of 14li.; of a tenement in Wooler of the yearly value of 2li.Ios. ; and of tithes in Norhamshire and Islandshire limited by the settlement made on the marriage of my father, William Haggerston, esq., deceased, in tail male.

Edlingham Castle farm, the other moiety let to William Wood and William Dobson, 35li.

*The lady whose register is abstracted in the text was Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Riddell of Fenham and Swinburn, and married, in 1695, William Shafto of Little Bavington, who seems to have conformed to the Church of England. Her husband, at her instigation, it is traditionally said, went out in the Rebellion of 1715, was attainted and lost his estates. He is stated to have died in exile. Their only son, John Shafto, was in the service of the Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, but returning to Northumberland, died at Hexham in June, 1773, without issue, and it is believed unmarried. Mrs. Elizabeth Shafto died in Newcastle in November, 1747. See pedigree of Shafto in new History of Northumberland, vol. iv, pp. 417-420.

Sir John Swinburne, third baronet, stated to have been born 8th July, 1698, succeeded his father in 1716. At the time the certificate was made the Capheaton estate was held by Sir John's mother and grandmother in satisfaction of their dower. See Registers Nos. xxIII, xxiv.

The water corn mill of Edlingham let to Robert Dixon, 20li. A capital messuage called South-field and Thornhill Bank. The farm-hold of Newton, &c.*

† Gilbert Errington of Portgate, second son of Richard Errington of Beukley (who had purchased Portgate in 1654 from Sir Edward Radcliffe), and brother and heir of Edward Errington of Beukley, was buried at St. John Lee 31st December, 1725. He was succeeded by his nephew and devisee, Edward Widdrington of Colt-park. See Register No. LXVII, and pedigree of Errington of Portgate in new History of Northumberland, vol. iv, p. 213.

This certificate or register was intended to supplement No. LXXI.

§ Sir Edward Gascoigne of Parlington, sixth baronet, succeeded on the death of his father in 1723. See Register No. xxx. On the 7th June, 1731,
