back to the tomb of a thousand other ineffectual attempts; but do not mislead us with apparent interest; we would know our soundings, or 'quit the ship.'

If all who read-all who are reading this Magazine—had aided its growth, there would be no lack of sustenance. Dozens, not to say hundreds, monthly peruse these pages, with all the cacoethes judicandi of a Lockhart, whose two dollars were a jewel not to be wasted on such trash!

This may be sound logic, but independent of the pride they ought to feel in sustaining this monument of youthful effort, we scruple not to affirm, that the improvement derived from their critical essays upon its papers is worth more to them than the scanty pittance asked at their hands.

Comparisons with other works, suggest to many a more profitable means of outlay; but he who withholds his aid on such a ground, is as destitute of reason as one proffering the productions of Johnson in place of his own, for their superior excellence! Improvement-improvement by the investigation, and by the committal of error, is what we offer. We would learn wisdom from experience, rather than imitation.

And can there be many who will not shiver a lance for their Lady's sake our common Alma Mater?

We take this opportunity of returning our cordial thanks for the many favorable notices of our work in various parts of the Union. To the Connecticut Observer, the New Yorker, the Baltimore Visiter, and the Clipper; to the Louisville News Letter, the Reading Gazette, Brother Jonathan, and to the various State papers, we hold ourselves under much obligation. And since the time has now come, when our periodical must look abroad for support, when Yale must seek that patronage from the public, which her sons refuse, we ask no acquittal from error, by the world, but seek only that even and just consideration to which our age and inexperience entitles us.

The suggestions kindly offered by our Baltimore and Washington friends, were intended to be pursued. But we find that a regular chronicle, of the character proposed, would require more trouble and time than our situation warrants.

Obituary notices, however, of the alumni of the Institution, will, if presented, be made public; and we would also request information relative to any graduates in high stations, which may be thought of sufficient interest to communicate, in our usual residual sheet. Notices of orations and productions emanating from the College, we intend in future to present, as the publications may appear.

Snow has overtaken us before our reappearance, and we welcome winter, as the friend of leisure hours, and the herald of approaching festivals.

TO CORRESPONDENTS.- -ERRATA.

Thanksgiving is by us, and we greet it cordially, as is our wont; though it has come upon us like a thief!

Many records of meetings and grave doings are recorded for future generations, but time and space forbid their entrance here; and we close these few remarks with the hope of meeting our readers with new zeal on the coming month.

TO CORRESPONDENTS.

We have on hand some dozens of articles, submitted for consideration, all of which are either to be returned through the post office, to some cabalistic address, or to be by no means noticed by us.' We hardly see any ground for such squeamishness on the part of our correspondents; we hope ever to be candid, nor do we intend to expose any trust committed to our charge.

The articles above alluded to are declined, with the exception of one or two under consideration.

The author of the articles signed H. A. C. must try again, and pay a little more attention to his prosody.

'The Drama'—the 'Chapter from an Unpublished Work'-with the Vacation Tale, are declined.

We refer N. to the distich of old Nicholas Rowe,

"Ah, Colin, thy hopes are in vain,

Thy pipe and thy laurel resign;

Thy false one inclines to a swain,

Whose music is sweeter than thine."

"Lines to Maria," with its admirable points of bathos, reminds us of a verse we once met with, where we know not,
