PREFACE.

THE earlier books of this series treat mainly of subjects with which children are more or less familiar: the lessons being framed so as to bring the observations of the child into order, to suggest points of interest or inquiry respecting the matters treated, and sparingly to supplement the information so gained by the wider knowledge of the teacher.

The Fourth English Reading Book advances a decided stage. The groups of subjects are more complete and systematic, and the treatment more logical. This advance in subjects imposes the necessity for an extended vocabulary and to facilitate and secure the full mastery of the matter and language we now give head words with definitions.

Having thus taxed somewhat more severely than at any former stage the powers of the learner, we have conscientiously avoided all unnecessary difficulties: the use of pretentious words and phrases is discarded, and we have generally employed simple and direct sentences to convey our thoughts.

Of each of the three subjects treated we may say a few words:-I. STEPS TO SCIENCE. These lessons avoid all attempts at 'cram.' They are intended first to awaken an interest in the subject, and then very clearly to show the way in which it should be pursued. II. SCHOOL ETHICS is a subject that the
