God's favour, upon their true Repentance, (Poena, Pœnitentia-Penitence, Penance—μɛrávoιa, resipiscentia,) by the means which God has mercifully appointed for their reconciliation to Himself; i. e. obedient hearing of His word, duly preached; unfeigned and sorrowful confession of all their past sins; satisfaction, as far as may be, to the body, or to all whom they have wronged or offended; intercession of other, lively, members, and especially of the Ministry, as rulers of the Church (James v. 14. Joel ii. 17); absolution faithfully received at the mouth of those to whom Christ has given the keys of His kingdom and power to remit sins (Matt. xviii. 18), John xx. 23; and, thereupon, worthy partaking of the body and blood of Christ, whereby they are restored to all the privileges of full Communion.

XI. What do you understand respecting the resurrection of the body to everlasting life, which is another privilege of this Body?

See Athan. Creed. John v. 24. 29. Matt. xxv. 46. 1 Cor. xv. 44.

XII. Why do you believe that the Church, and it only, speaks all truth, and is therefore to be believed? 1. Because it is "a witness and keeper of Holy Writ" (Art. xx.), i. e. of the word of God; and all that it teaches me, e. g. in the Creeds, "may be proved by most certain warrants" of God's word. (Art. viii.)

2. Because it is "the pillar and ground of the truth." 1 Tim. iii. 15.

3. Because it has the promise of the perpetual guidance of God's Holy Spirit. John xvi. 13.

CHAPTER VI.

OF OBEYING-DUTY TOWARDS GOD.

I. WHAT is the third part of the vow you are preparing to CONFIRM ?

II. Show how the Commandments are closely connected with the Creed, and naturally follow after it.

1. Because Tioris without obedience is imperfect, and dead;-xwpis twv čρywv vekρά. James ii. 26. 2. Because the Commandments are the will of Him,

Eiç ÖV TIOTEúW. See John xiv. 15. 2 John 6. 3. Because I receive the Commandments and the rest of God's word by tradition from the Church, ᾗ πιστεύω.

4. Because the several Articles of the Creed are not

only matter of faith but motives to obedience; i. e. they contain the reasons why I am bound to love God, and keep his Commandments.

III. Have not we Christians many more motives to obedience than the Jews had; and is it not reasonable that the Commandments given to us should be enlarged too?

See Matt. v. 17. οὐ καταλῦσαι, ἀλλὰ πληρῶσαι. John xiv. 1. Πιστεύετε εἰς τὸν Θεὸν (who brought you

out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage) kai iç 'EME (your SAVIOUR and Sanctifier out of the bondage and corruption of sin) TLOTEVETE. Also John v. 23.

IV. How are the Commandments divided in the Catechism, and how many fall under each division?

V. Show from this division, as found in the Law and the Gospel, that these Commandments (however fulfilled and enlarged to us in some particulars) are in the sum and substance of them, no less than in the letter, "the same which God spake" to the Jews.

Compare Deut. vi. 4, 5. x. 12. Lev. xix. 18. with Luke x. 27. Matt. xxii. 37. vii. 12.

VI. What is the First Commandment, as delivered in the Law, and as fulfilled by Jesus Christ?

To worship and serve the Lord oUR GOD (see Creed), and Him only. See Deut. vi. 13. Matt. iv. 10.

VII. What are the duties especially contained under this First Commandment?

1. To serve and obey God in all things; i. e. to keep all his Commandments.

2. To serve and worship God, observing all the ordinances which He has particularly appointed for his own worship. Public and Private Prayer, according to God's word, and in communion with, and obedience to, his Church.

3. To serve and worship God according to Catholic religion, i. e. as ONE; and according to Christian verity, i. e. as THREE PERSONS.

4. To serve and worship none other God.

VIII. What is the Second Commandment, as delivered in the Law, and fulfilled in the Gospel?

To worship and serve God rightly and acceptably, considering WHO THE LORD OUR GOD IS ;

i. e. As a Spirit, spiritually. John iv. 24.

As a jealous God, exclusively. Matt. vi. 24. 1 Tim. ii. 5. As a rewarder of them who diligently seek Him, with the whole heart, and mind, and soul, and strength. Heb. xi. 6.

IX. What are the duties especially contained under this Second Commandment?

1. To worship God not only with my lips, but with
my heart. Inward adoration and Thanksgiving.
See 1 Thess. v. 17, 18. Especially thankful remem-
brance of Jesus Christ, and devout cherishing of
the communion of His Spirit.

2. To set my heart upon nothing, in competition or
comparison with God. See Col. iii. 5, 6.
"Evil
concupiscence and covetousness, which is idolatry."

X. What is the Third Commandment, as delivered in the Law, and fulfilled in the Gospel?

To honour God by hallowing HIS NAME (ovoμa), i. e. every thing by which He is called, or known to us, as His Name, His Word; and which is more immediately set apart to his honour and service, as His House, His Ministers. See Matt. vi. 9. ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου. 1 Pet. iii. 15. Κύριον δὲ τὸν Θεὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν.

XI. What are the duties more especially contained under this Third Commandment?

1. To abstain from all vain use of God's name; from all profane language; from all swearing. Matt. v. 34.

2. To reverence the word of God; reading it often, marking its instructions, receiving its promises with all faith and thankfulness, &c. &c.

3. To reverence the house of God. Lev. xix. 30. John ii. 13-17. Matt. xxi. 12, 13. "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together." Heb. x. 25.

[ocr errors]

4. To reverence the ministers of God; i. e. the Clergy
(kλñpos), as allotted to God (Numb. viii. 14.
John xvii. 6), and ordained of Him to be " over
his people, and to speak and act in his name in
holy things; and as sent to us by Christ, even
as Christ was sent by the Father (John xiii. 20.
xx. 21); " esteeming them very highly in love
for their works' sake." See 1 Thess. v. 12, 13.
5. To reverence and keep the two holy Sacraments
ordained by Christ, as the most precious legacy,
and remembrances of Himself, to his Church.
See Matt. xxviii. 19, 20. Luke xxii. 19.

XII. What is the Fourth Commandment, as delivered in the Law, and fulfilled in the Gospel?

To keep every day holy unto the Lord," serving Him truly all the days of my life," but especially every Sunday or "Lord's day," as more immediately set apart to His honour and service. See 1 Cor. x. 31. Matt. vi. 3134. Heb. iv. 9. Rev. i. 10.

XIII. What change has the Gospel introduced in the observance of this Commandment, and what motives have we for keeping it, including the motives presented to the Jews?

1. See Exod. xx. 11. xxxi. 17. Deut. v. 15,

2. See Mark xvi. 2.

3. See Acts ii. 1-4.
