by the sprinkling of his own blood sanctifies the Church, and that abundantly. For the priest, he says, shall dip his finger in the blood, and shall sprinkle the blood with his finger seven times before the Lord. "For we have come," he says, "to the heavenly Jerusalem and the Church of the first-born written in heaven, and to the blood of sprinkling speaking better things than the blood of Abel;” for the blood of Abel cried out to heaven, condemning his homicidal brother; but that precious blood of the Saviour of us all speaks to God better things for us; for it is shed that it should be an exchange for the lives of all.

For he saved the dwellers upon the earth and the human race, which was wholly lost, and rescued them from death and corruption, and the despotism of Satan. For he baffled him, together with that are with powers him, and he justified by faith, having expelled the sin which For all tyrannized over us. these things are effected for us by Christ. For he was made to us by God the Father, justification, and redemption, and sanctification.

and not for our sins only, but for those of the whole world, as the divine John wrote to certain persons. Wherefore

in Him truly is all purification, all justification, in Him there is sanctification and redemption.

De Adoratione in Spirit. et Verit. Lib. iii. tom. i. p. 2. p. 105. (Editio ut supra.)

Εστι τοινυν ουκ ασυμφανες, μαλλον δε δια πασης ημιν μεμαρτύρηται της θειας γραφης, οτι πασα δικαιωσις και πασα λυτρωσις εν Χριστω.

It is not, therefore, undiscoverable; but rather it is testified to us throughout all the divine Scripture, that all justification, and all redemption is in Christ.

De Adoratione in Spir. et Ver. Lib. vii. pars 2. p. 231. (Editio ut supra.)

You see clearly the power of the mystery of Christ shining forth in these. Forwe are ransomed, and the Saviour of all has freed us gratuitously. For we have partaken of his thus excessive kindness not by the works of righteousness which we have done, but according to what is written, through his abundant mercy.

τας αμαρτίας

For we have been justified in Him, and not by the works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his great mercy. For he came into this world, not that he should judge it, but rather that it should be saved by him. But it was saved in no other way but by (his) great kindness. For he said, “ Ι am he who will blot out thine iniquities, and will not remember them.” And again, “And thou, O Israel, be not forgetful of me. For behold I have blotted out thy transgressions as a cloud, and thy sins as darkness." And David sings, and truly says to him, "Thou hast regarded with favour, Ο Lord, thy land, thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob, thou hast remitted the trespasses of thy people, thou hast covered all their sins." Therefore

we are saved and sanctified in the righteousness of God the Father, that is, in Christ, having washed away the stains of wickedness.
