these poor men should

from their country, but they

Jerusalem which is above.
They lived in poverty, but
they were rich in piety.
They were hateful to men,

are these? Elias, Elisha,
and all who were like them.

The Church is the congregation of all the Saints.

(Comm. in Job. c. xxvii.) Tom. viii. p. 72.

Ecclesia sit desiderans Christo conjungi. Ecclesiam cætum omnium adverte sanctorum. (In Cant. Cant. Hom. primo, tom. viii. p. 299.)

Commentariorum in Psalmorum lxxxvii. Tom. viii. p. 260. Denique ipse

Many Romanists, and Dupin and the Benedictines among the rest, deny that Jerome wrote the Commentary on the Psalms. It was ascribed to Jerome in the ancient editions of his works, and was generally received as his for a great length of time. Marianus Victorius, who was a Bishop and Professor of Theology, after summing up the arguments on both sides, decided in favour of Jerome's being the author of the Commentary. But, as it should seem, Marianus erred. The Commentary was written in the fourth century, and probably by some evangelical bishop or priest. It is an excellent work.

The Soul of the Believer is the true Temple of Christ. Ad Paulinum de institutione monachi. Tom. i. p. 122. (Editio ut supra.)

Verum Christi templum anima credentis est: illam exorna: illam vesti: illi offer donaria; in illâ Christum suscipe.

It is the Duty of Pastors to build up a Church composed of Living Stones, because the Church, which is the Body of Christ, should be composed of Living Stones.

Commentariorum Hieronymi. Lib. ii. in Epistolam ad Ephesios. c. iv.

Mariani Victorii, &c. Tom. vi. p. 400. Parisiis, 1602.

None but true Believers belong to the Church of Christ. Commentariorum Hieronymi, Lib. iii. in Epistolam ad Ephesios, c. v.-Mariani Victoriis. Tom. vi. (Parisiis, 1602.)

The Assembly of the Elect are the Church and Temple of God.

Ει δε το ιερον δίχως εκλαμ βάνεται, ο τε Θεος αυτος και το εις τιμην αυτου κατασκευασμα, πως ου κυρίως την εις τιμην του Θεου κατ' επιγνωσιν αγιαν γενομένην Εκκλησιαν, ιερον αν ειποίμην Θεου, το πολλου αξιον, και ου βαναυσω κατεσκευασμε νον τεχνη, αλλ' ουδε αγύρτου χειρι δεδαιδαλμενον, βουλησει δε του Θεου εἰς νεων πεποιημενην. taken in a double sense, namely, as God himself, and that which is constructed to his honour, why may we not authoritatively call the church, which, by the acknowledgment of him, is sanctified to the honour of God, the temple of God, which is of great value, and not prepared by mechanical skill, nor curiously wrought by the hand of some wonderful artist, but which is formed into a temple by the will of God. For I do not now call the place, but the assembly of the elect, the church. For this temple can best worthily receive the greatness of God.

Basil.

The Church does not consist in the Multitude, but in the Elect, who may perchance be very few.

save us, but a determinate choice, and a true love of Him who created us. Consider, also, that in the conspiracy against our Lord, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders, concocted the deceit, whilst a few of the people were found who sincerely received the word, and that it is not the multitude that is saved, but the elect of God. Then never let the great numbers of the people alarm you, who, like the water of the sea, are carried about by the winds. For if one be saved, as was Lot in Sodom, he ought to abide in a right judgment, having an immoveable hope in Christ, because the Lord will not desert his saints. Embrace for me all the brotherhood in Christ. Earnestly pray for my unhappy soul.

Christ is Spiritual.

A Sermon of Basil upon Psalm xxix.

Or perhaps it becomes us to understand as the house, the Church which is built by Christ; as Paul writes in his Epistle to Timothy, “ that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of Gov, which is the Church of the living GOD." But the dedication of the Church is to be deemed the

The Queen, the Dove, the Church, is the Union with Christ of the Souls of those who walk holily.

S. Basilii, &c. Homilia in Ps. xliv. Tom. i.

St. Basil's Sermon on the 44th Psalm.

The queen stood on thy right hand in a golden and variegated vesture. He now speaks of the Church, concerning which we have learnt in the Canticles that it is the one perfect dove of Christ, which places at the right hand of Christ those who are distinguished by good works, separating them from the wicked as a shepherd separates the lambs from the goats. The Queen, therefore, stands near (that is to say), the soul which is prepared by the bridal word, and which is not governed by sin, but which partakes of the kingdom of Christ, on the right hand of the Saviour, in a golden vesture, that is to say, in spiritual doctrines interwoven and variegated.

All who trust in Christ constitute the Church.
