For this cause we say and speak these things, lest you should be able to say at that day, no one told us, no one explained to us, we were ignorant, we thought that it

was no sin.

Heaven is our temple.

Chrys. in Epist. ad Heb. c. viii. Hom. xiii. tom. xii.

(Editio ut supra.)

p. 822.

By which we approach God. But there he is conducting us to heaven, and shewing that we have heaven, instead of a temple.

God is the only teacher.

Chrys. in c. x. Matt. Hom. xxxiii. tom. vii. p. 388. (Editio ut supra.)

But we are not worthy of the Apostles ? I confess, this, indeed, and I will never deny it; for we are not only not worthy of them, but we are not even worthy of their shadow. But nevertheless let your part be performed. This cannot reflect discredit upon you, but you will the more profit by it. For when you shall have displayed such love and obedience to the unworthy, then you will receive a great recompense. For we do not speak our own words, for there is no teacher upon earth, but we deliver what we have received, and delivering it, all that we seek from you is to be loved.

Miracles without godliness are useless.

Chrys. in inscrip. Act. Apost. Serm. xii. tom. v. p. 158. (Bened. edit. Parisiis, 1839.)

Ότι

All confess that Judas, one of the twelve, wrought miracles; that he cast out devils; that he raised the dead; that he cleansed lepers: but nevertheless he fell from the kingdom of heaven. For the miracles could not save him, because he was a thief and a robber, and the betrayer of the That miracles cannot Lord. save without good conduct and a correct and well regulated life is shewn by these things. But that you may know) that conduct, which derives no support from miracles, and which does not receive their alliance, but which appears alone, enables a man to enter boldly into the kingdom of heaven, hear Christ himself, who says,

Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Why? because they had raised the dead? Because they had cleansed lepers? because they had ejected devils ? No. But why? "Ye saw me hungry, he says, and ye fed me ; thirsty and ye gave me drink, naked and ye clothed me, a stranger and ye took me in." No where wonders; but every where conduct,

Married men might be made bishops, provided they had not twice married.

“If any one, he says, is blameless, the husband of one wife, having believing children, not accused of riot or unruly.” Why does he introduce such a one? stops the mouths of heretics who abuse marriage, shewing that it is not a polluted thing, but so honourable, that with it a man may ascend the holy throne (of episcopacy*), and by this also correcting the wanton, and not suffering them to undertake this authority after a second marriage.

For he who has become perfect, has the Apostles as exemplars ; and in truth he is shewn to be a man by selecting the solitary life; but he surpasses men, who being strongly exercised by marriage and the procreation of children and household cares, uninfuenced by pleasure or sorrow, remains inseparable from the love of God, and

Continence is a gift.*

Stromatum, lib. iii. p. 429. (Editio ut supra.)

But we deem continence, and those to whom this has been given by God blessed. And we admire monogamy and the sanctity which belongs to one marriage.

The Romanists have a tradition, or rather pretend, that Peter separated from his wife, when he went forth as an apostle, and that our translation of the words in St. Paul's epistle a wife, a sister,” ought to be “ε a woman, a sister," and this accordingly is inserted at the end of the Douay Bible, among the mistranslations of the heretics. But Clemens had heard a tradition that Peter was present at his wife's execution.

Clem. Alex. Stromatum, lib. vii. p. 736. (Editio ut supra.)

They say, then, that the blessed Peter, when he beheld his wife conducted to death, was pleased on account of her calling and her return home;t and that he entreatingly and consolingly addressed her, saying, Remember the Lord. Such was the marriage of these blessed persons, and

+ The Romanists may say that her return implied her former absence: at all events Clemens calls Peter's wife," γυναικα,” which vindicates our translation. In the next quotation he brings forward the very passage which the heretics are said to have purposely mistranslated.

The Apostles married.

Clem. Alex. Strom. lib. iii. p. 449. (Parisiis, 1641.)

Η και τους Αποστολους αποδοκιμάζουσι ; Πετρος μεν γαρ και Φίλιππος επαιδοποιησαντο. Φιλιππος δε και τας θυγατερας ανδρασιν εξεδωκεν. Και ογε Παυλος ουκ οκνει εν τινι επιστολη την αυτου προσαγορεύειν συζυγον, η ου περιεκόμιζεν, δια το της υπηρεσίας ευσταλες. Λέγει ουν εν τινι επιστολή, ουκ εχομεν εξουσιαν αδελφην, γυναικα περιάγειν, ως και οι λοιποι Αποστολοι;

Or do they disapprove also of the Apostles ? for Peter and Philip begat children, and Philip gave his daughters to husbands. And Paul too does not hesitate in a certain

epistle to speak publicly of his wife, whom he did not carry about on account of the light equipment of his ministry. He says, therefore, in а certain epistle, have we not power to lead about a sister, а wife, like the other apostles ?

Presbyters and deacons married in the days of the Apostles. Clem.* Alex. Strom. lib. iii. p. 464. (Editio ut supra.)

Whence the Apostle also says, "I will that the younger women marry, bear children, rule their houses, give no occasion to the adversary, for the sake of reproach. For some have already turned after Satan.” Moreover he every where receives the husband of one wife, who practises matrimony blamelessly, whether he be a presbyter, or deacon, · or layman.

Clemens seems to have imbibed the notion, which was so general in the 4th century, respecting post-baptismal sins. Lib. iv. also Lib. ii.
