THE WORK OF THE SESSION.

THE FIRST MEETING of the Association, after the brief Christmas vacation, was the annual Conversazione, which was held in the Assembly Room of the Royal Hotel, on January 7th, 1879, about 200 being present. The evening's proceedings commenced with a performance of Mr. Tom Taylor's Comedy, "The Babes in the Wood," by members and friends, to whom the Association is no little indebted for their valuable and willing help. Mr. Taylor's pleasant and sparkling piece was rendered with an animation and grace which elicited warm commendation. After supper, dancing commenced, and was continued to a late, or rather early, hour. The entertainment appeared to be thoroughly enjoyed by those present, and the financial result is a satisfactory balance. in favour of the Association.

March 21st, 1879-LECTURE by Mr. C. J. Duchemin, at the Grand Hotel, upon "Mozart and Beethoven," with illustrations from their pianoforte sonatas. Mr. Duchemin's able and instructive lecture was listened to with marked attention, and his masterly rendering of the passages selected for illustration evoked warm and merited applause. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the lecturer for his valued services. The attendance, including ladies and friends, amounted to 240, being the largest audience ever assembled under the auspices of the C. L. A.

The destruction of the Reference and Shakespeare Libraries by fire appeared to the Committee to be an occasion calling for action upon the part of the Association. Circulars were therefore promptly issued, inviting the members to contribute to a special fund in aid of the reparation of this public calamity. The response has been very gratifying, and the contributions promised amount to £162 8s., independently of considerable sums forwarded by members of the C. L. A. through other channels.

By a resolution passed at the meeting held on February 21st, 1879, the following clause has been added to Rule 13:-"Reporters for the press shall not be admitted to the ordinary debates of the Association."

By the lamented death of Mr. G. W. Cole, the Association has lost an old and valued member, a regular attendant, and a firm friend.
