It is most unfortunate (remarks Archbishop Whately) that this allusion is lost in our version, our translators rendering the word Diátheke sometimes by "covenant," and sometimes "testament," which is likely to mislead the English reader. See Hebrews viii. 6, and ix. 15. See also Alford's Greek Testament.

Our version has "the cock crow," as if denoting some particular individual. But the article (answering to the English 66 the," which our translators have inadvertently inserted in all the passages) is not in the original. Whately's Lectures on the Apostles, p. 54, note, 2nd edit.

"The Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost," says Dr. Moberly on this verse, "is not only a Doctrine and an Appellation, but is also something to be admitted into; something within which a man is not where he was before; something, from being within which he comes to have a claim to that appellation; a holy Precinct, as it were; a position of new relation, an estate of new privilege,
