Finis SECUNDÆ SATIRÆ.

THE

THIRD SATIRE

OF

PERSIUS

The ARGUMENT.

THE Defign of the third Satire, is, to excite in young Noblemen more particularly, a ferious Attention to the Studies of Philofophy. To this End, Perfius, affuming the Character of a grave Preceptor, reproaches here fome Student of Quality, for his Indolence and for his Intemperance. How fhameful (fays the Sage) is the Course of Life you are leading! to digeft the Debauch of the preceding Night, you lie dozing in Bed every Day 'till Noon. Nay, at laft, when you rife, instead of employing your Time in learned Purfuits, you are trifling it away in foolish Excufes. You prefume, it is like, that High-Birth can privi

lege

lege Ignorance; and Wealth make amends for the Want of Wisdom. But this you will find a moft grievous Mistake : for know, he that would be happy, must first be wife. Apply then, in time, to Philofophy; pursue ber Doctrines, and practife ber Precepts. Elfe, will you foon fee your self in the Cafe of that indifcreet Patient, who, from refufing to regulate bis Conduct by the Directions of bis Phyfician, Juffers bis Complaints to become incurable.

O! fure as Morning comes, the Trade's the fame !

See,fee! broad Day-light (fee, and blush with Shame) • Spight of thy bolted Shutters, pierces through, • And every Chink enlarges to the View.

• Yet here dream we, and fnore regardless on,

• Till Day's ferene and precious half be gone. • Sick of the Bottle, here lie we in Bed,

To fleep off drunken Fumes, and aking Head. • Come, don't you ftir ?-See, fultry Sirius reigns, • And long ago has parch'd the thirsty Plains:

O'erpower'd with Heat, the panting Flocks are laid,

• Beneath the friendly Elm's refreshing Shade.'
