succeeded in obtaining provision of Orpington. He had further provision, 20 July, 1393, of a preb. in St. Paul's (Cal. Papal Letters, iv., 468). This was Kentish Town, of which he obtained possession on 30 June, 1395 (Le Neve, ii., 404), and bad ratification on 5 Feb., 1395-6 (Cal. Pat., 1391-6, p. 658). On 3 Nov., 1393, he was inst. to Algarkirk, Lines., in succession to John Ravenser (Lincoln Reg. Buckingham, ii., f. 83). In 1395 he exch. his Wells preb. for Chalke preb. in Wilton (Cal. Papal Letters, iv., 505), in which his estate was ratified on 1 May (Cal. Pat, 1391-6, p. 564), the ratification being followed by a formal grant of the preb. on 16 Oct. (ibid., p. 637). At the close of July, 1397, he received an indult to receive the fruits of his benefices while nonresident (Cal. Papal Letters, v., 23). He had ratification of his estate in Dunnington preb., 26 Sept., 1397 (Cal. Pat., 1396-9, p. 202), having received a week earlier, on 19 Sept., papal provision of the church of Somersham, Hunts (Cal. Papal Letters, v., 79; cf. Cal. Pat., 1396-9, p. 262). His benefices at this time, not counting Somersham, to which he does not appear to have been inst., were valued at 480 marks. On 8 Nov., 1397, he had a grant of the archdeaconry of Exeter (Cal. Pat., 1396–9, p. 279), which, if he obtained, he held for only a short time (see Le Neve, i., 394). The Exeter registers record no collation. He exch. his Salisbury preb. in 1397-8 for St. Martin's altar preb. in Beverley, to which he was pres. by the Crown on 17 March (Cal. Pat., 1396-9, p. 324), and had coll. on 22 March of Leighton manor preb. in Lincoln, for which he exch. his preb. in St. Paul's (Lincoln Epis. Reg. Buckingham, Inst., ii., ff. 444, 444 d), and of which he had ratification on 16 April, 1398 (Cal. Pat., 1396-9, p. 320). He was inst. to his preb. in Beverley on 8 May, 1398 (York Sed. Vac. Reg., ff. 228, 229). On 18 March, 1398-9, he exch. his preb. in Lincoln and Dunnington preb. for Cave preb. in York (Lincoln Epis. Reg. Beaufort, ff. 217, 217 d; 19 March in Reg. Scrope, f. 1 and d) on a pres. by the Crown, bearing date 26 Feb. (Cal. Pat., 1396—9, p. 477). On 15 Sept., 1399, he had a grant from Richard II. of the mastership of St. Leonard's hospital, York (ibid., p. 595), and on 14 Oct. he obtained ratification of his estate in this, in his churches of Algarkirk and Somersham, and his prebs. in York, Beverley and Wilton (ibid., 1399-1401, pp. 4, 5). The Lincoln registers contain no record of his having obtained possession of Somersham. He was one of the founders of the Ravenser chantry in Lincoln minster in 1398 (ibid., 1396-9, p. 477), and is named as one of the supervisors chosen in July, 1407, to select workmen for the building of the great tower of York minster (ibid., 1405-8, p. 383). His name appears as a legatee of John Scarle in 1405 (Test. Ebor., iii., 24), and as one of the legatees to each of whom bishop Skirlaw of Durham left a silver basin and ewer in 1406 (ibid., i., 410). In 1414 he and Thomas Haxey were executors of John Neuton, treasurer of York, who left Waltham a silver basin with a great letter M on the bottom (ibid., i., 367). He died in 1416: his will (ibid., iii., 55 sqq.) bears date 2 Sept. with codicil of 5 Oct., and was proved at Beverley on 9 Oct. He desired to be buried in Lincoln minster, next his uncle John Ravenser. His bequests included £40 to the fabric of York, 100 marks to that of Lincoln, and £40 to that of Beverley minster, the last bequest being devoted to the construction of the great east window. To Beverley he also left most of his law-books with the reversion of others: other books of canon law were left to King's hall, Cambridge. He bequeathed an antiphoner to Algarkirk church, and a portas and missal, which had belonged respectively to his uncles Richard and John Ravenser, to the Ravenser chantry at Lincoln. His executors gave a long silver banner-stave for processions to the church of York (York Fabric Rolls, p. 220). THOMAS WYOT. There were two or three clerks of this name at the beginning of the fifteenth century between whom it is hard to distinguish. One of these, on 14 June, 1393, obtained a papal mandate to receive collation of a reserved canonry and prebend in Ferns cathedral, which was disputed by another claimant. He was vicar of Kilcolumb, co. Kilkenny, and had recently had provision of the vicarage of Bray, Berks, which he proposed to resign on accepting a benefice in the gift, joint or several, of the bishop and prior and convent of Winchester (Cal. Papal Letters, iv., 468). He had ratification of his estate in the preb. of Whitechurch or Slecultre in Ferns, 4 May, 1399 (Cal. Pat., 1396-9, p. 521), and again 19 Sept., 1401 (ibid., 1399-1401, p. 484). Thomas Wyot, chaplain, had coll. of the church of Horton, Bucks, 4 Aug., 1402 (Lincoln Epis. Reg. Beaufort, Inst., f. 192 d), in which his estate was ratified on 10 March, 1402-3 (Cal. Pat., 1401-5, p. 206), after some dispute which necessitated the issue of a commission to keep the peace (ibid., p. 275). On 18 Dec., 1403, he exch. Horton for Wymondham, Leices. (Lincoln Epis. Reg. Beaufort, Inst., ff. 83, 193). On 19 Sept., 1411, Thomas Cordon exch. Wymondham for Stanwell, Middlesex (Lincoln Epis. Reg. Repyngdon, Inst., f. 166 d). The Wyot, however, associated with the diocese of York appears to be Thomas Whiot, priest, inst. to Birkby on 20 March, 1403-4 (Reg. Scrope, f. 166). Thomas Wyot, priest. on 8 Dec., 1409, exch. Birkby for a mediety of Cotgrave, Notts (Reg. Bowet, i., f. 213), which he res. by 5 June, 1411 (ibid., f. 219 d see also a mention of him in Cal. Papal Letters, vi., 273). This is probably the same person as the canon of St. Sepulchre's chapel mentioned on p. 195, who obtained his preb., being then a household clerk of archbishop Bowet, 22 Sept., 1409 (Reg. Bowet, i., f. 44 d). He had coll. of the succentorship of York, Sept, 1429, and of Normanton preb. in Southwell, 27 Dec., 1421 (ibid., ff. 70 d, 72 d, 73). The archbishop left" vnam integram robam de scarlet" and 100s. to sir Thomas Wyot (Test. Ebor., iii., 82-3). Thomas Wiot vacated the preb. of St. Mary's altar at Beverley by death in 1441-2 (Reg. Kempe, f. 48). INDEX. The figures in parentheses indicate that the name is repeated that number The letter "n" indicates that the name is in the notes to the page.
