↑ Unto Habakkuk, complaining of the in-
iquity of the land, 5 is fberved the fear-
ful vengeance by the Chaldeans.
THE burden which Habakkuk the
prophet did fee.

2 O LORD, how long fhall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not, fave!

3 Why doft thou fhew me iniquity, and caufe me to behold grievance? For fpoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up ftrife and contention

Therefore the law is flacked, and judgment doth never go forth for the wicked doth compafs about the right eous; therefore wrong judgment proceed

5¶Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously for will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you

gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad.

16 Therefore they facrifice unto their net. and burn incenfe unto their drag; becaufe by them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous.

17 Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to flay the nations? CHAP. II.

I WILL ftand upon my watch, and fet me upon the tower, and will watch to fee what he will fay unto me, and what I fhall anfwer when I am reproved.

2 And the LORD anfwered me, and faid. Write the vision, and make it plain, upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

5 For the vifion is yet for an appoint6 For, lo, I raife up the Chaldeans, that led time, but at the end it thall fpeak, bitter and hafty nation, which thall march and not lie though it tarry, wait for through the breadth of the land, to poffefs it; because it will furely come, it will the dwelling places that are not theirs. not tarry. 7 They are terrible and dreadful; their judgment and their dignity thall proceed of themselves.

11 Then thall bis mind change, and he hall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god.

4 Behold, his foul, which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the juft fall live by his faith.

5 Yea alfo, because he tranfgreffeth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his defire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be fatisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people :

12 Thou didst march through the land in indignation, thou didst thresh the heathen in anger.

18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my falvation.

19 The LORD God is my ftrength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief finger on my ftringed inftruments.

CHAP. I. God's fevere judgment against Judah for divers fins.

THE word of the LORD which came anto Zephaniah, the fon of Cushi, the fon of Gedaliah, the fon of Amariah, the

CHAP. III.

11 In that day halt thou not be alhamled for all thy doings, wherein thou haft tranfgreifed agaiuft me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.

12 I will alfo leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they thall truft in the name of the LORD.

13 The remnant of Ifrael fhall not do iniquity, nor fpeak lies; neither fall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they fhall feed and lie down, and none

Is it not in your eyes in comtle; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye parifon of it as nothing? drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages, earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

7 Thus faith the LORD of hofts, Confider your ways.

Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the houfe; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, faith the LORD..

9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? faith the LORD of hofts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is ftayed from her fruit

4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, faith the LORD; and be strong, O Jofhua, fon of Jofedech, the high prieft; and be ftrong, all ye people of the land, faith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, faith the LORD of hosts:

5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, fo my fpirit remaineth among you fear ye not.

6 For thus faith the LORD of hosts, Yet once, it is a little while, and I will hake the heavens, and the earth, and the fea, and the dry land;

7 And I will shake all nations, and the defire of all nations hall come, and I will fill this houfe with glory, faith the LORD of hosts.

8 The filver is mine, and the gold is mine, faith the LORD of hosts.

9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, faith the LORD of hotts; and in this place will I give peace, faith the LORD of hosts.

11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour 10 In the four and twentieth day of of the hands. the ninth month, in the fecond year of Da12 Then Zerubbabel the son of She-rius, came the word of the LORD by altiel, and lofhua the fon of Jofedech, Haggai the prophet, faying, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had fent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.

15 Then fpake Haggai, the LORD'S mellenger in the LORD's meffage unto the people, faying, I am with you, faith the LORD.

14 And the LORD ftirred up the fpirit of Zerubbabel the fon of Shealtiel, gover nor of Judah, and the fpirit of Joshua the fon of Jofedech, the high prieff, and the fpirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the houfe of the LORD of hosts, their God,

15 In the four and twentieth day of the fixth month, in the fecond year of Darius the king.

CHAP. II. 1 He encourageth the people to the work, by promife of greater glory to the fecond temple than was in the first. to He bewerb that their has bindered the work. 20 God's promije to Zerubbabel. IN the feventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Hag gai, faying,

11 Thus faith the LORD of hosts, Afk now the priests concerning the law, faying, 12 If one bear holy flesh in the fkirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, Shall it be holy? And the priests anfwered and faid, No.

18 Then faid Haggai, If one that it unclean by a dead body touch any of thefe, Shall it be unclean? And the priests anfwered and fard, It shall be unclean.

16 Then anfwered Haggai, and faid, So is this people, and fo is this nation before me. faith the LORD; and fo is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

15 And now I pray you, confider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a ftone in the temple of

the LORD:

16 Since thofe days were, when one came to an heap of twenty meofures, there were but ten; when one came to the prefs fat for to draw out fifty wefels out of the prefs, there were but twenty.

17 Ifmote you with blafting, and with mildew, and with hail, in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, faith the LORD.

18 Confider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day
