6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a feafon, (if need be,) ye are in heavinefs through manifold temptations; 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that peritheth though it be tried with fire, 23 Being born again not of corruptmight be found unto praife and hon-ible feed, but of incorruptible, by the our and glory at the appearing of Jefus word of God, which liveth and abideth Chrift: for ever.

He diffuadeb them from the breach of charity. 11 He beleecbeth them aljo to abflain from flesbly lufts, 18 to be ebedient to magiftrates: 18 and teachesh fervants how to obey ibeir masters, 20 patiently fuffering for well doing, after the example of Chrift.

6 Wherefore alfo it is contained in the fcripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner ftone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him fhall not be confounded.

7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be difobedient, the ftone which the builders difallowed, the fame is made the head of the corner,

He teacbeth the duty of wives and bufbands; & exhorting all men to unity and love, 14 and to fuffer perfecution. 19 The benefits of Chrift toward the old world. 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

3 Whofe adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold,or of puttingon of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet fpirit, which is in the fight of God of great price.

5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women alfo, who trufted in God, adorned theinfelves, being in fubjection unto their own hufbands:

12 Having your converfation honeft a mong the Gentiles: that, whereas they fpeak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they fhall behold, glorify God in the day of vifitation. 18 Submit yourselves to every ordi- 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, callnance of man for the Lord's fake: wheth-ing him lord: whofe daughters ye are, as er it be to the king, as fupreme;

7 Likewife, ye hufbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker 15 For fo is the will of God, that with veffel, and as being heirs together of the well doing ye may put to filence the ig-grace of life; that your prayers be not norance of foolith men :

16 As free, and not ufing your liberty for a cloak of malicioufnefs, but as the fervants of God.

17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

18 Servants, be subject to your mafters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but alfo to the froward.

19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for confcience towards Ged endure grief, fuffering wrongfully.

20 For, What glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye fhall take it patiently? But, if, when ye do well, and fuffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were ye called: bea ufe Christ also fuffered for us, leaving us n example, that ye should follow his fteps: 22 Who did no fin, neither was guile found in his mouth :

8 Finally, beye all of one mind, having compaflion one of another; love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous :

9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwife bleffing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye fhould inherit a bleffing.

10 For he that will love life, and fee good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they fpeak no guile :

11 Let him efchew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and enfue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

13 And, Who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

14 But and if ye fuffer for righteoufnefs' fake, happy are ye and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

11 If any man speak, let bim speak as the oracles of God; if any man minifter, let bim do it as of the ability which God giveth that God in all things may be glorified through Jefus Chrift; to whom be praife and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 12 Beloved, think it not ftrange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though fome ftrange thing hap pened unto you:

18 For Chrift alfo hath once fuffered for fins, the juft for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in 18 But rejoice, inafmuch as ye are parthe flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: takers of Chrift's fufferings; that, when 19 By which alfo he went and preach-his glory thall be revealed, ye may be ed unto the fpirits in prifon; glad alfo with exceeding joy.

20 Which fometime were disobedient, when once the longfuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight fouls, were faved by water.

21 The like figure whereunto even baptifm doth alfo now fave us (not the putting away of the filth of the fleth, but the anfwer of a good confcience toward God) by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift: 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made fubject unto him.

CHAP. IV.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Chrift, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God refteth upon you: ca their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

15 But let none of you fuffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a bufybody in other men's matters.

16 Yet if any man juffer as a Christian, let him not be afhamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God; and if it firft begin at us, What fhall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 1 Peter exhorteth them to ceafe from fin 18 And if the righteous fcarcely be by the example of Chrift, and the con-faved, Where fhall the ungodly and the fideration of the general end that now finner appear? approacbeth.

For the time paft of our life may fuffice ns to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lafcivioufnefs, lufts, excefs of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

4 Wherein they think it ftrange that ye run not with them to the fame excefs of riot, fpeaking evil of you:

7 Bus the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore fober, and watch unto prayer. 8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourfelves: for charity fhall cover the niultitude of fins.

THE SECOND EPISTLE GENERAL OF PETER.

CHAP. I.

5 Peter exhorteth them by faith and good works 10 make their calling fure: 12 as knowing that bis death is at hand: 16and warnerb them to be conftant in the faith of Chrift, who is the true Son of God. SIMON PETER, a fervant and an apoftle of Jefus Chrift, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteoufnefs of God and our Saviour Jefus Chrift:

2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jefus our Lord,

to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be eftablished in the prefent truth.

13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to ftir you up by putting you in remembrance;

14 Knowing that shortly I must put off rbis my tabernacle, even as our Lora jefus Chrift bath fhewed me.

15 Moreover, I will endeavor that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

16 For we have not followed cunningly devifed fables, when we made 3 According as his divine power hath known unto you the power and coming given unto us all things that pertain uato of our Lord Jefus Chrift, but were eyelife and godliness, through the knowl-witneffes of his majesty.

6 And to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness;

7 And to godlinefs, brotherly kindaefs; and to brotherly kindness, charity.

8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye ball neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jefus Christ.

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot fee afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old fins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election fure: for if ye do these things, ye thall never fall.

19 We have also a more fure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day ftar arife in your hearts:

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the fcripture is of any private interpretation.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God fpake as they were inoved by the Holy Ghoft.

2 And many hall follow their perni cious ways; by reafon of whom the way of truth thall be evil fpoken of.

3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandife of you: whofe judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation flum

bereth not.

4 For it God fpared not the angels that finned, but call them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

5 And fpared not the old world, but faved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteoulness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

to whom the mift of darkness is reserve for ever.

18 For when they fpeak great fwelling words of vanity, they allure through the luft of the flesh, through much wantonneis, thofe that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

19 While they promife them liberty, they themfelves are the fervants of corruption for of whom a man is overcome, of the fame is he brought in bondage.

20 For if after they have efcaped the pollutions of the world throughthe knowl edge of the Lord and Saviour Jefus Chrift, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worle with them than the beginning.

6 And turning the cities of Sodom and 21 For it had been better for them not Gomorrha into athes, condemned them to have known the way of righteousness, with an overthrow, making them an en-than, after they have known it, to turn fample unto thofe that after should live from the holy commandment delivered ungodly; unto them.

The certainty of Chrift's coming to judgment. 10 The manner bow the world fhall be defroyed. 11 An exbortation to godliness.

THIS fecond epiftle, beloved, I now write unto you; in bob which I ftir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

That ye may be mindful of the 11 Whereas angels, which are greater words which were spoken before by the in power and might, bring not railing holy prophets, and of the commandaccufation against them before the Lord.ment of us the apoftles of the Lord and 12 But thefe, as natural brute beafs, Saviour: made to be taken and destroyed, fpeak 3 Knowing this firft, that there shall evil of the things that they understand come in the last day fcoffers, walking afnot; and hall utterly perish in their own ter their own lufts, corruption :

And faying, Where is the promise of his coming? For fince the fathers fell afleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the fame word are kept in ftore, referved unto fire against the day of judgment, and perdition of 'ungodly men.

8 But. beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
