MESSRS BELL'S BOOKS OF REFERENCE.

A HISTORY OF ROMAN LITERATURE. By PROFESSOR W. S. TEUFFEL. Fifth Edition. Revised, with considerable Additions, by Professor L. SCHWABE. Translated by G. C. W. WARR, M.A., Professor of Classical Literature at King's College, London. 2 vols. medium 8vo, 15s. each. [Vol. II. in the press.

Vol. I.-THE REPUBLICAN PERIOD. "It is not detracting from the world-wide and long-established reputation of Teuffel's History of Roman Literature' to declare that no ordinary human being could sit down and read it. In purpose, as in style, it is but a book of reference, and a superlative book of reference it is.. .As compared with the 1870 book, the present one is more a recast than a reissue, and, as the previous English translation had been made from the original edition, we have to thank Mr Warr very cordially for the first volume of this translation from the German text of 1890. The task was not a light one, and it gave many chances for blundering. But we may testify without any reserve to the patient and intelligent care bestowed upon it.' -Saturday Review.

KLUGE'S ETYMOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE. Translated from the Fourth German Edition. By J. F. DAVIS, D.Lit., M.A. (Lond.) Crown 4to, half-buckram, 18s. "Philologists in general, and modern language masters in particular, will welcome a translation of 'Kluge's Etymological Dictionary of the German Language.' We are especially grateful to the English publishers and printers, who, by their well-chosen type, have enabled us to take in at a glance the salient features of each article-a feat that is beyond the powers of the native German in the Gothic type of the original."-St James's Gazette.

FRENCH AND ENGLISH

DICTIONARY.

With up

wards of Fifteen Thousand new words, senses, &c., hitherto unpublished. By F. E. A. GASC. 4th Edition, with numerous Additions and Corrections, and New Supplements of 42 pages. 10s. 6d. In use at Harrow, Rugby, Shrewsbury, &c.

POCKET DICTIONARY OF THE FRENCH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES. By F. E. A. GAX. Containing more than Five Thousand modern and current words, senses, and idiomatic phrases and renderings not found in any other dictionary of the two languages. 45th Thousand. 16mo, 2s. 6d.

THE NEW WEBSTER.

An entirely New Edition, thoroughly Revised, considerably Enlarged, and Reset in New Type, entitled —

WEBSTER'S INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY. Demy 4to, 2118 pages, 3500 Illustrations, cloth, £1, 11s. 6d. ; half-calf, £2, 2s.; halfrussia, £2, 5s.; calf, £2, 8s. Or in Two Vols., cloth, £1, 14s.

"A cursory comparison of this edition with the last of 1864 will show that the book is virtually rewritten. Nearly 40,000 words have been added to the vocabulary, and nearly 1000 woodcuts to the illustrations. We have turned out some hundred words wherein we have found the ordinary dictionaries defective, and in over 90 per cent of these 'Webster' has satisfied us."―Journal of Education, April

1891.

"We believe that, all things considered, this will be found to be the best existing English dictionary in one volume. We do not know of any work similar in size and price which can approach it in completeness of vocabulary, variety of information, and general usefulness."-Guardian, April 8, 1891.
