Wrath, withdraw his Afliftances, and leave us to our felves. When therefore humane Passions, and bodily Parts, are ascribed to God, we are to understand such Expressions not properly, but as spoken by way of Condescontion to our Weakness, and as suited to our Capacity, who in this State are unacquainted with the manner how Spirits a&t. For were thefe Expreffions to be understood strictly, they would infer some Imperfection in the divine Being, which both Reason and Religion forbid us to ascribe to God. Since therefore Such Expressions occur often in the holy Scriptures, it may be of use to explain some of them. Are Pity and Compassion, for and Sorrow,afcribed to God; the Meaning is, that God will do the same and much more for us than Men are wont to do to chofe towards whom they are thus affected ? Wbeni God punishes, he is said to be angry; when theie Puniji.ments are severe and lafting, he is said to be full of Fury and Revenge ; when they are for Idolatry, and for the Dishonour Men do to him, he is faid to be Jealous. As Men when they repent of their do. ings alter their Method of Action; so God is said to repent, when he does not do what his Threatnings seemed to import, for that there was in them an exception exprefled or understood. Not that there is any real Change in God, but the Change is in us. Wherefore what God created, he now destroys; what he before deligned to destroy, he will now preserve and prosper.
God's Face and Countenance towards any Person, denotes his Favour, as his turning it away does his Displeasure. His Eyes denote his Knowledge; his Finger, his Hand, and Arm, his Power ; his Bowels, his Mercy in noc For our Eyes are Instruments of Knowledge, gur Hand and Arm of Power, Weturn to those we favour, and from those we are offended with. Many more Infiances might be given, but I cannot profecute this subject at large ; and there are sufficient to prevenç, our forming in our Minds any gross Conceptions of God. I will add only one practical Observation. If we compare this Verse and the former, we shall see that unholy, corrupt, lewd and filthy Discourse, deprives the Guilty of the sacred Influences of the holy Spirit, which as they are the Earnest of our future Happiness, fo are they the Pledges of our Pardon and Acceptance. What a mighty Argument is this to prevail with Christians to abstain from all luch Discourse, which is an infallible Token of a debauched and corrupt Mind? And what an afflicting Thought must it be to all who love God, and their Neighbour, to consider how common such Difiourse and Communication is among vafi Numbers who say they are Chriftians ?
