OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

"Mr Scrymgeour has presented the reader with a connected series of lessons upon the most popular and interesting branches of Science, Natural History, Geography, History and Biography. Most of them are taken from writers of eminence in their several departments, and all are of a literary cast in point of style. The summary of general history drawn up by the Compiler, is perhaps the most valuable part of the book. It is astonishing how much information is comprised within the seventy pages devoted to the subject, and how happily the amount of space allotted to each part is proportioned to its importance. The outlines are distinctly marked, and yet not so bare as to render the narrative uninteresting. A vast fund of biographical and other information is contained in the notes. Altogether this is a very superior class-book."-Athenæum.

"Mr Scrymgeour has produced a book which has all the fascinating qualities of the old Collections,' and is yet full of most instructive and valuable matter, scientific, literary and historical. The departments included under Natural Science are illustrated by extracts from Humboldt, Chalmers, Herschel, Nichol, Bell, Miller, Brougham, &c. The passages connected with Natural History, &c., offer fine specimens from the writings of Jeffrey, Channing, and Dr Layard. The department of History, presents in small space a connected vidimus of the great events in ancient and modern times; and the text is illustrated by original notes, got up with great care, and which must be exceedingly valuable to the student. The Poetical Section contains a number of gems from the old and modern writers. The whole winds up with a chapter on English Etymology, a Latin Vocabulary, &c. Altogether, Mr Scrymgeour has produced an excellent work; it will be an acquisition to the class-room, and may be popular with readers of every age as offering in the form of a scrap book, a mass of delightful and instructive reading. It is no small recommendation to say that the book is well printed, and exceedingly cheap."-Glasgow Herald. "An excellent text-book for use in senior classes of schools, as well as for private instruction. In addition to the ordinary kind of extracts found in common-place compilations, the editor has given courses of reading on science and the arts, and other subjects which ought to find a place in the general education of the young. High science and literature are so combined as to give testimony to the taste and intelligence of Mr Serymgeour as a compiler and as a public teacher. The original part of the volume, containing a summary of general history, and an account of the history and etymology of the English language, is creditably performed. The volume is a valuable addition to our educational books."-Literary Gazette.

NOTICES OF THE FIRST BOOK.

"We commend this work as carrying out the new and engaging method of teaching Geography; it has also the special merit of being carefully adapted to the purposes of class teaching. We have no doubt that books of this description are rapidly taking the place of works on Geography too long in use in our Schools. Mr Rhind states his conviction, that pupils of ten years of age are capable of appreciating the subjects so admirably arranged in this little book; if so, Schoolmasters and Parents are negligent who withhold these improvements in school literature from their children. We include parents in this censure, because we know how often the teacher has to contend with obstacles from that quarter in the introduction of new books."-Educational Times.

"Mr Rhind has furnished an excellent book, which will not fail to command the patronage of the better class of Schools. In this much-condensed production, there is a large amount of very important matter, and we can, with great confidence, recommend it as admirably adapted to promote its object."Christian Witness.
