Ir is proper to state, that this volume has been prepared at the request of a friend of Common Schools, and is now published through his instrumentality. He has directed a copy of it to be placed in each of the School Districts, incorporated Academies, and County Clerks' Offices of the State of New-York, as well as in the hands of the Governors of the several states, and of the Deputy Superintendents of Common Schools in the several counties of this state.

Though prepared with special reference to the condition and wants of Common Schools in the State of New-York, its general principles and most of its details will be found applicable to similar schools in other parts of the country, and, indeed, to all seminaries employed in giving elementary instruction.

State of New-York.

Secretary's Office, Department of Common Schools.

Albany, August 15, 1842.

THE following volume, entitled "The School and the Schoolmaster," has been specially prepared for the benefit of the Common Schools of this State. The first part of the work, commencing with "The Education of the People," was written by PROFESSOR A. POTTER, D.D., of Union College, Schenectady. The second part, commencing with "The Schoolmaster," was written by GEORGE B. EMERSON, A.M., of Boston, who has long been a celebrated practical teacher of youth.

The approbation of this volume by the Superintendent of Common Schools was made a condition of its publication. I have therefore attentively examined, in manuscript, both parts of the work, and have been much gratified with the plan and the execution of the respective parts; and under the confident expectation that this volume will be an important acquisition to our Common Schools, as weli as to parents, teachers, and all the friends of Education, I hereby award to it my unqualified commendation.

S. YOUNG,

Superintendent Common Schools.
