"For it is our opinion, that if men were possessed of a just history of nature and ex-
"perience; were thoroughly versed therein, and could command themselves but in two
"particulars, i. e.

"The one in laying aside all received notions and opinions; the other, in withholding
"their assent for a season from general conclusions; they might, by their proper and
"native force of mind, without any other art, fall upon our form of interpretation; as
"the whole is no more than a genuine, and natural work of the mind."

MR. BALDWIN'S LEGACY

TO HIS DAUGHTER,

OR THE

DIVINITY OF TRUTH,

THE E object of this Publication is to present to the world, a series of writings, obtained from the hand of Cesare Avena de Valdieri in the Magnetic Sleep. These are in Italian idiom of course; and although most interesting for that reason, to such as are conversant with the sweetness of that harmonious language, will not be wanting of novelty, and variety, to engage attention from the curious and inquisitive of all orders, of all countries, and conditions of men.

The inferior part of this work, in English, consists of notions of my own; and may be said to be my pioneers, to break and cut a way through the dark forest of prejudices, with which our road to the Truth has been for a length of time so grossly encumbered. I have been told, that I shall be called a Visionary, and I am told by Scripture, "That where there is no vision, the people perish."

My reason for calling this work, my Legacy to my Daughter, is, because it is the only property I have to leave to her, and because I am pressed by age to give unto this ghostly form, a local habitation and a name. My reason for saying, Or the Divinity of Truth, is, because there is a felt divinity in Truth, and to meet, so armed, a sort of general disposition in the world, to doubt of its being the production of a man absorbed in sleep: "The lip of Truth shall be established for ever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.”
